  • Exhaust Questions.. Yes, I searched.. :)

    1978 XS1100

Dug the old girl out of storage since it's been un-seasonably warm here the past few weeks! Hit 80 today! Normal high is like 40 with snow on the ground still!

Anywho, I put the fairing back on as the wind can get a bit cold still. One thing I notice is the extreme build up of exhaust behind the windshield. Especially since the old girl has taken to burning about 1 quart every 500. No smoke that I can see, but I can sure smell it. Whew.

Someone removed the original exhaust (of course), and installed some farty 4 into 1. I'm VERY tired of my nice clean XS sounding like a 17year olds riced out Civic.

Hoping I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone here. If I cut off the stupid fart can and replace it with a new Harley muffler, will it mellow it out? Would extending the tail out more help too??

Here is a pic I just snapped of my current exhaust. Is it possible to replace it with a JD muffler and some welding?

IMHO the problem is that it's a 4-1, where a 4-2 IMHO sounds much better rather like dual exhaust on a V8 engine on a car. A Harley muffler might help with the sound some, but it's not going to help with the fumes, for that you need the vents in the windshield, which can be bought from Craig Vetter on his website along with instructions on how to install them, with them open then get rid of the vacuum behind the windshield and makes for more fresh air while still keeping the wind off you.

I think that might be a Mac exhaust which I've heard some say just don't sound very good, a mac 4-2 might sound a bit better but I don't know or sure as I have as set of Jardine pipes on mine.

I think a single harley muffler will end up being too restrictive. You might check to see if you have a removable baffle, and if you do wrap it with some muffler fiberglass. You'll probably have to replace the glass on a regular basis, but that might do the trick....

Ill look tomorrow and see if I can pull the cores.. I have some graphite wrap that I used on my CB650 mufflers once... Ill give that a try..

Otherwise... Whats a good quiet exhaust I should look for? Besides original (HA).

I looked on the site but couldn't find them. I DID hit up eBay tho. I need a new windshield anyway (yellow/cracks) so I'll order a vented one from the get-go. Thanks for the info!

Have You thought about using a Super Trapp muffler, which is tuneable for sound and performance ?

On the exhaust smell thing, sadly, with a full Windjammer style fairing like that, it does make a big vacuum that fills in from behind. I get tired of mine on long trips, because you get more pressure pushing on you from behind than you do from the front. It puts added pressure on your hands and wrists having to hold yourself off the bars.

I just ordered two of these for my XS. Reviews are good on it. I need to get them on quickly for a trip next week, so I'll let you know how they do. I bought some extra packing for the baffles, so it may be bit of experimenting to get the sound I want.

Is that a Jardine 4 into 1? You know they don't make those anymore. You might consider selling/trading those. I put some harley muffs on stock pipes and the tone was a higher pitch (I didn't like the sound). They did quiet the noise however.

Yeah i was gonna say the same thing...Thats a Jardine "spaghetti" exhaust...damn hard to find...dont cut that up...thats one of the best aftermarket exhaust for our bikes... all but unobtainable these days. That exhaust alone would sell for as much or even more than the bike.

Yeah, let us know how those work out. I've got a set of pipes that somebody welded some GS1000 mufflers to and I like the look of the shorter mufflers compared to the long standard muffs, but they bungled the mounts pretty badly...

Alrighty.. Cutting the exhaust is OFF THE TABLE now.

Will see if I can pull the baffle and re-wrap it. But, it IS 80 degrees, 2:30 in the afternoon and sunny RIGHT NOW.. Plus, I put 15 bux in the tank before I parked it last night...

Last thing I'm gonna do right now is take apart a nice running bike. I'm gonna go get me some sunburn!

I don't know if you read the stats on those, but they are very long. The ones that were a little shorter were double that price. I just wanted something to replace the crappy welds I've done to where the collector and muffler meet, as well as the road rash on the right side where I wrecked it. It's gonna make me sick to cut off the left side since it's still in pretty good shape, but these muffs don't have the collector.
