When someone with a bad southern drawl around here says it, retired and retard sound the same. lol. They might be onto something, Ben.
I can see all the hate mail now from all you retired (Retard?) guys.. lol...Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.
You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!

The difference isn't in the center plate, it's in the risers on the clamps. You have the ones for the Special there. The ones for the Standards don't raise the center plate above the rings in the clamps.1980 XS850SG - Sold
1981 XS1100LH Midnight Special (Sold) - purchased 9/29/08
Fully Vetterized and Dynojet Kit added, Heated Grips, Truck-Lite LED headlight, Accel Coils, Irridium plugs, TKAT Fork Brace, XS850LH Final Drive & Black SS Brake lines from Chacal.
Here's my web page devoted to my bike! XS/XJ User's Manuals there, and the XJ1100 Service Manual and both XS1100 Service manuals (free download!).
Whether you think you can, or you think you cannot - You're right.

well i'm just a little conflicted because on page three of this thread Jamie shows a pic with the 2 adapter plates and says the taller one is correct...which is what I was basing my info on...then you all say basically the opposite...but I will give it a shot and find that y'all are prolly right...not feeling my "guru" status on this one...LOL1980 XS650G Special-Two

I'll be interested in your results, I've been wanting to put one on my XJ11 but wasn't sure if the Special version fitted properly on the XJ. And I also thought from Jamie's photo, that the one with the "legs" on the adapter (to make it taller) was the XJ version & the one in your photo doesn't have those legs on the adapter.82 XJ1100 Maxim "hurricane"- DEKA EXT18L AGM battery , NGK BPR6EIX spark plugs, Green Dyna coils, Sylvania SilverStar Ultra H4 bulb, 139 dB Stebel Nautilus air horn, Home-made K&N air filter based on an original paper filter frame, new piston rings, Barnett Clutch Springs, SS braid/Teflon brake lines, TKAT fork brace, rebuilt calipers, master cylinders, new brakes, reupholstered seat, lotsa little things and so many answered questions here.Comment
