Hey all. New to this forum and motorcycles in general. I was replacing my air filter today and noticed a port in the bottom of the air box that is open. It looks like it can let unfiltered air into the engine which doesn't seem right. Should this be connected to anything? I looks like a drain port because it is at the lowest point in the air box.

That's exactly what it is. It's supposed to have a small filter on it but they usually get lost over time.
I just put one of those plastic push in fasteners like cars use to hold plastic covers on, like under the dash. It allows the airbox to drain but keeps the majority of crud out. I'm not sure if you can get any kind of filter for it unless you make somethingGreg

Thanks guys. I will find something to stuff in there but still let the gas drain out. When I took the air box off it was a little gassy but not bad.Comment

Incidentally, any airflow through the port you described is pre-filtrationLast edited by James England; 02-11-2012, 02:21 PM.XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. Are you sure? There's the air breathing snorkel that goes under the seat, facing backwards... doesn't that lead to the inside of the filter, on the other side of the port referred to? ie unfiltered air side? I might be suffering from false memory syndrome here or guilty of misinformation....... please advise...Last edited by James England; 02-11-2012, 04:26 PM.XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. The air travels through the snorkle to the inside area of the filter and flows outward. The opposite of an automotive filter.
The drain hole is just below the airhorns of the carbs on the outside of the filter.Greg

I concur BA80. I will look into the carb work to fix the gas issue. Might be getting over my head though. Thanks.Comment

Yes, I was aware of the flow etc but, from my obviously poor memory, I thought the port was in the centre of the airbox, ie opposite the entry of the snorkel into the box and therefore on the unfiltered side of things. Mea culpa.... thank heavens someone knows what they're talking about...XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace.
