  • port in bottom of air box

Hey all. New to this forum and motorcycles in general. I was replacing my air filter today and noticed a port in the bottom of the air box that is open. It looks like it can let unfiltered air into the engine which doesn't seem right. Should this be connected to anything? I looks like a drain port because it is at the lowest point in the air box.

There is supposed to be a small square metallic filter in there.

That's exactly what it is. It's supposed to have a small filter on it but they usually get lost over time.

I just put one of those plastic push in fasteners like cars use to hold plastic covers on, like under the dash. It allows the airbox to drain but keeps the majority of crud out. I'm not sure if you can get any kind of filter for it unless you make something

Thanks guys. I will find something to stuff in there but still let the gas drain out. When I took the air box off it was a little gassy but not bad.

There should be no gas in there at all. If there is, you have a float level wrong/faulty on one of the carbs which is allowing fuel to overflow through the air intake of the carb and into the filter box. A slightly sticking float/float needle will cause this, as will a badly adjusted float height. There really shouldn't be any fuel dripping or draining out of that port.

Incidentally, any airflow through the port you described is pre-filtration

PRE- what filtration? The air in that cavity goes directly into the carbs.

Are you sure? There's the air breathing snorkel that goes under the seat, facing backwards... doesn't that lead to the inside of the filter, on the other side of the port referred to? ie unfiltered air side? I might be suffering from false memory syndrome here or guilty of misinformation....... please advise...

The air travels through the snorkle to the inside area of the filter and flows outward. The opposite of an automotive filter.

The drain hole is just below the airhorns of the carbs on the outside of the filter.

I concur BA80. I will look into the carb work to fix the gas issue. Might be getting over my head though. Thanks.

Yes, I was aware of the flow etc but, from my obviously poor memory, I thought the port was in the centre of the airbox, ie opposite the entry of the snorkel into the box and therefore on the unfiltered side of things. Mea culpa.... thank heavens someone knows what they're talking about...
