I just got mine in the mail today and had it on the bike in about five or so minutes. What a simple and wonderful swap! Goodbye leaky-leaky!

OK, Why do I need it
From someone who purchased a bike (79 special) with 18,00 miles and so far, no issues with the engine, should I purchase this as a preemptive maintenance measure? It does seem something that from reading numerous posts, is an issue that many are concerned about. And if this is the case, maybe a quick explanation as to why this is is so important for those of us who are not so technically savvy? If this has been covered in previous posts, I apologize, I have been married for 32 years, and my brain is not what it used to be. (if any of you know my wife, please refrain from affirming to her that I am an not so smart, she is pretty good at doing that herself, plus, I just lost her cat 2 days ago so I am not the most popular person in my home right now):-) Thanks, JonLast edited by LiteFiter; 10-11-2012, 07:30 PM.1979 XS1100 Special

If you have the funds to do it and there are no other pressing issues on your bike I would absolutely recommend this change. For one thing it is a set it and forget it kind of deal. After any Cam chain adjustment with the old style tensioners there is always the chance it may slip or that you may strip the bolt holding the tension.
I have changed every single bike I run, to this style, and have extra tensioners for those that do not yet run. This is very important as well for those who are a bit neglectful on their servicing. It takes the "what if " out of the equation. I highly recommend this procedure for anyone who rides XS's.2-79 XS1100 SF

I sure can't think of any reason (other than Crazy Steve's above) not to upgrade such a simple part. More consistent tension is a very good thing. And the price is very right.-- Clint

The tensioner is a well documented weak point. Plenty have had theirs fail, some have been very luck and not had any damage, others not so luck and their piston ate some valves.
If you are going for a perfect restoration you probably are not going to be riding much if at all, so the stock is fine. If you plan on riding the bike then I think it is just a matter time as to when that POS OEM tensioner will fail. Since you can get the raptor or vision tensioners for under $20 usually I say do it sooner rather than later.Nathan

Ready to buy
OK, I am convinced it is an easy preventative measure to take. Question, there are a couple of used ACT's through Muff's for around $20. But there is also a new one with gasket available through Weller racing for $90. I have had some not so great experiences in the past when buying used, and I get concerned when dealing with something that is inside the case. Am I over thinking this? I would rather pay the $20 but don't want to spend low and suffer for it later. Thanks, Jon1979 XS1100 Special
