I will have to get back to you on that one Phil. The bike is not here right now, just looking to get it righted. As for buying a new one...the pic is just one in my trash pile and it was shown to suggest directional referencing.

        Ok

OK, not trying to get you mad, just pointing out that a new part is so cheap and not all that easy to replace later, was just trying to help

Not mad in any way. Just wanted to make the point so it did not go further in that direction. Sorry if you thought I was directing that at you.

Hey Ras, what I see in that pic is the legs that go over the pin exteneded from the case seem closer to the paw than to the case. Which would indicate the flat side so to speak goes against the paw.

If your question is how to position the two legs, you need to spread them further apart, so they uncross, then slide them onto the shift paw. As I recall, thinking about it, there is a pin on the shift paw to keep them spread so they slide over the one extended from the case on installation.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Buying a new one still does not solve the original question of which way to install it.

Thanks. That pretty clearly shows which way he has it installed. Now to find out which way we did it on the second gear fix.

I just figured it was easier for me to post for you trdriver71. I am also wondering if I did it right on the 81LH so it is a self serving thing as well.
