Do the scratch/witness marks on the shift drum plate and the shift pawl line up when in 2nd gear?

I will have to get back to you on that one Phil. The bike is not here right now, just looking to get it righted. As for buying a new one...the pic is just one in my trash pile and it was shown to suggest directional referencing.2-79 XS1100 SF

Hey Ras, what I see in that pic is the legs that go over the pin exteneded from the case seem closer to the paw than to the case. Which would indicate the flat side so to speak goes against the paw.
If your question is how to position the two legs, you need to spread them further apart, so they uncross, then slide them onto the shift paw. As I recall, thinking about it, there is a pin on the shift paw to keep them spread so they slide over the one extended from the case on installation.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
