Which way is this spring installed or does it matter?

don't think it matters... but personally i would put the flat part away from me so the s bend leg is easier to get to for future removal

Funny boy BA80. Yes it is the shift return spring. Figured anyone qualified to answer would know what it was so I neglected to put that in the question. I do know you are knowledgable in this area so no offense meant.

Same picture as I have been looking at. If you look at the pics I posted you can see why my confusion. Looks different than a 2 D pic on a fiche.

If this is it, looks like the flat side facing in:
OK. That's one thing I'm not real familiar with. I just went and looked but all the engines I have (7 not counting what's running) only one has that cover off and that particuar part is gone.
In the parts fiche it looks to me like the curved leg goes inside. It should only fit right ONE WAY I would think. That curved leg ain't there for no reason.

That was a typo, looks like OUt for the flat side in the picture as the moving part it drives is on the outside, makes sense to me, but should only fit in right one way anyway So should be clear when installing I would think Or to be correct, should go in the way it came out!

Thanks for the input. It moves the shifter BOTH WAYS, so it could be either way. If it was clear I would not have asked! It has been about a year since it was apart so my memory is a bit jaded as to the way it came out.

It is a shame the pic isent more conclusive, it looked to me like the flat side was facing out, and the inside was the bent leg, but not as clear as it could be in the pic.

That is a pic I took as I disassembled Thunderstruck for the 2nd gear repair. Looking at it, appears the legs are against the shift paw.
The thing i am needing to know is which way does the spring fit under that shifter pawl. I did a second gear fix and the bike is not shifting down quite right. It has been suggested that that spring may be weak. I was wondering if it could have been installed assbackwards and that may be the problem. The thing holds the gears ok it just does not like to downshift without pl;aying a bit. I do not think the grinding of the gear was wrong, but who knows.
