  • Airbox reassembly

I've seen this asked a few times so since that's what I did yesterday I figure it couldn't hurt. After you have cleaned everything, mouse nests etc
    1. Start by laying out all your components

    2. Attach side trim/mouldings

    3. Put in numbers 1 & 4 velocity stacks
    4. lossely attach frame brackets with short screws only
    5. Insert and attach crankcase breather hose manifold

    6. Insert 2&3 velocity stacks

    7. Insert long screws and spacers
    8. Fit upper bracket by slipping the rear portion in first the push out on the long side until it falls in flush with upper box rim. A little dexterity and patience is require here as you have to ensure the top of the spacers and screws line up with the fitted nut holes in the bracket.
    9. Take a small flat tipped screw driver and work around the edges of the snorkle until it fits into the slotted groove of the bracket
10 Secure the bracket to the upper airbox with the clamp and two screws
11 Insert wing nuts and keepers into the airbox lowwer and test fit the two halfs

If you find that there is a larger than acceptable gap between the two halfs, then just remove the wing nuts and grind them shorter by an 1/8 th or so. Dont forget to put a nut on them first as grinding will mess up the starting threads. Removing the nut restores the threads.

    Nice

Nice job BikerPhil had a good idea, he cut the loop off the upper bracket and cut the outside part of the snorkle off, so when you have to remove the carbs, you can slide the whole airbox out first to make the rest easy Thinking about doing it on mine as I remove the carbs almost daily

Sounds like something someone would bitch about a PO for.

          Air box

Steve did a mod to his, in which he basically gutted the internals completely and made a cool air filter adaptatyion. I've been waiting for him to repost on performance improvemnt. By the way I forgot to mention this but this box was off the LH so the vent holes are plugged, same steps would apply for a 78/79 box, but I would add that for thoughs, ensure the vent holes are unobstructed before reassembly step #1.

I would not install the crankcase gas manifold. They are for emissions, I know, but if you put oily dirty air into the carb inlets, that isn't good in the long term for emissions, is it?

There a few schools of thought on that... one is that helps reduce the crankcase pressure and help with seal life as well as adding maybe a bit of power. As far as emissions, it's better to burn the vapor rather than just spew it into the air...

I installed mine on my modded airbox, but did cut off the 4 tubes that go into the carb throats.
