Headlight wire and GPS

I am hooking up a GPS on my bike (I could get lost on a one-way street looking for the dead end) So, I am asking if it would be OK to just hook it into the "hot when key is on" lead inside my headlight houseing, and then the other wire to ground

Put an extra fuse in the line, go for it. I've been down those dead end roads in Le-hi. Bullet holes in the signs.

That's what I'd do. Those things draw waaaay too little current to cause much trouble...and if you're mounting it where I would (on top of the handlebar brackets) that'll make your wiring nice and short and simple.

Hey Lon/OEM,

If you're going to be using the GPS on other vehicles as well, they usually use a cigarette lighter adapter, you could then get a spare cig. lighter adapter socket from local auto store and wire it into that headlight wire(s) for plug and play or removal. You could zip tie the cig. adapter socket to the inside of one of the headlight ears. Can't recall if you have a fairing? JAT.

I've wired a Cig. Adapter Socket to my AUX terminal, has a fuse already on it!

I am with tc here. Not hardwired and then it becomes a more multipurpose install.

I work at Oreilly Auto Parts. We have a weather resistant lighter adapter that comes with the wiring and an inline fuse. Also has a mounting plate.

I also know that kuryakyn has a really nice one that has a handlebar clamp. But they are fairly expensive.

Amazon has them too. theres different sizes for different units. I like the padding in it so it dont shake the crap out of it

No problem buddy.... I'm getting one and doing the same thing. I priced a "motorcycle' Garmin. $400 is a bit rich for my blood. the Garmin in my boat cost that much. I'll stick my $70 car Garmin in a $15 holder and call it good

If it was in a 10 foot lake boat for chasing trout I could see the humor in it. It's in a 22 foot jet boat. GPS is a handy tool when navigating the Columbia River. Not only for fishing but just navigational purposes. being able to mark and save weigh points with notes when fishing is a bonus. Searching for docks with gas when your on a 100 mile run to the coast or up the Gorge is a bonus too. It came in real handy when we were vacationing @ Lake Shasta last year. after all day on the water sometimes you get turned around. marking your dock before leaving on the gps saves a bunch of gas.
