Why? Did it contact the cam?

If so it must have been installed incorrectly. Mine never came close to the cam unless the engine was rotated in the wrong direction then it interfered with the cam lobe.

Not being a smart a$$, I'm just really interested. I have never had a problem and I'm just curious.

I haven't done anything with mine yet, as I have yet to use it. I did look at using it when I did the valves on the SG, and it appeared to me that mine needing grinding in two places; a bit like shown on the one in the link, but also on the inside curve as mine looks 'fat' through there; I believe that's where Phil had to grind his. It certainly wouldn't fit as-is...

I may go ahead and mod it to fit, then post another tutorial using the MP tool before I button-up the motor I'm working on. It's winter, I don't have anything better to do...

This is the pic from xssiveone's post that shows where he had to grind it. I do not know if it is the same for other members or not.

    Whoops that did not work.

Like I said the MP tool works for me. It is just a bit more finicky to use and the other was easier. But I did not have to grind any off the MP to use it either.

    Same-same.........

Maybe a problem that was corrected? Mine is only 2 or 3 years old.

My MP tool doesn't look like either one of those.

    Just gor giggles

I went out to the man cave and got my Yamaha shim tool and my MP shim tool out. I tried both on a head I have lying about. Both will work but the MP is quite a bit harder to use. I got to comparing the two and thought you all may like to see what I found. Here is a pic of the two side by side in a vice. Sorry the pic is not clearer but I am not much of a photographer. This may explain why so many have to grind the MP tool. The Mp tool is the top and blackest one. I had never tried the MP one before today and it was a suprise that it sucked so badly.

I was just reading your cam chain post Marty. Before you go ordering a new chain, check and make sure all the sliders are OK. As in not XSively worn or broken. JAT
How do I check the sliders? If they are bad, the cam chain damper is NLA. has anyone here come up with a trick to repair it? Does the engine have to be disassembled to remove and replace it? Will my engine be making a lot of noise if the plastic material is gone?

I'm going to move this over to the cam chain wear post as well.

    Tool

Not that special my tools worked out of box also. I think that it can be tuff to get the tool into position on some valves but if you take care its better than pulling the cams for most people. I agree that if you are in a situation where you have multiple valves to get set the cam pull works but in a one or two adjustment I would not use the cam pull method.

Those roller chains aren't really prone to wear. I replaced a timing chain in a Mazda V6 just the other day and the chain was the same as what's in our engines, just longer. The chain was actually fine, the tensioner had gone south.

Well, it looks like at the end of the season I'll be replacing all of the shims AND the cam chain. So, I probably won't find out if I'm "special".
