Seat repair

My OEM seat on my XS1100SF has just started to get three very small cracks on the fake seam molded into it (only 33 years old, don't nothing last anymore) Has anyone used a repair kit / glue that worked to stop it before it tears

Hey OEM, I had a seat with a tear in it that was a decent size hole. About the size of a dime or so. I used a Vinyl repair kit made by Permatex to fix it. I have to say that unless I told you where the repair was you would have a hard time spotting it.

OEM, how bad are the cracks? If they are superficial, I have had luck using Lexol Leather Conditioner. It moisturizes, and the leather "swells up" to fill in the cracks. Probably won't work for a seat that has more than a tiny bit of damage, but may be worth a shot! I use it every month since my bike is outside (but covered), and it keeps the leather soft and dark.

I've also used leather repair kits like Leather Magic and the Permatex leather/vinyl kit with good results. As long as you don't have to do a bunch of color matching, they work well, but may be overkill for small spots (but then again, I've never used them on small spots so I don't know).

Yes, it is "Permatex Pro Style Vinyl & Leather repair kit". You put the cloth backing under it, then add a repair adhesive/filler to the level f the surface, it shrinks a little when it dries. Then add the color compound and put the grain pattern paper over the color compound and apply the heat to the pattern paper. Worked really well for me on a seat.

Here is a pic of the repair, admittedly it looks more obvious than I recalled in the bright light of the camera flash.

I know how the camera flash makes every little thing jump out at you I bet on the bike, you don't even see it My prob is. the spots are so small I dont know how I could get the backing under the hole without making it bigger or removeing the cover I might be able to push a small pice of backing in with a small screwdriver, then do the rest of the steps. I will give it a try, way less $$$$ then a recover job Dont have the funds right now too recover

The directions tell you that if the repair is that small, less than a 1/4", to skip the backing material.

Thanks DG and Danny, I will get some and give it a try Will "try" to reinforce from the inside also as I would like to nip it in the butt (that is where the holes are, where my butt sits)

I've used regular RTV black to fix tears in seats. It holds up very well, you can even paint it gloss black when it's dry. Not that great for a restoration project though.

Does it glue togather enough to stop the tearing? I blame my big butt for pulling it apart, so it will need some hold

Yes it does a good job that lasts. If you got a super fat ass, maybe not. JK

Is that Nikki Menaj? I swear I saw that same wide can on one of her 'music' videos. Notice I put music in quotes cuz I think she would sound better at the bottom of a lake, but I can't even stand to see videos of her cuz I always feel like I need to zoom out but can't! As opposed to some of the other teenybopper 'musicians' that are actually quite enjoyable to watch as long as the mute button is handy for the times they quit shakin it and open their mouths...
