  • Paint Question

I'm repainting my tank using Acrylic Emamel. Due to my inexperiance I have some spots that need to be fixed.
I know with lacquer you could just sand and repaint. What is the proceedure with Acrylic enamel. I chose this paint for its ability to withstand accidental contact with gasoline.
If I chose to strip it down to the bare metal; what would be the best way.

    TIA

    Sand / Buff

Sand the bad spots with 1500 grit till even, then sand everything with 2500 or 3000 grit till very smooth, wet sanding all grits with just a drop of dish soap in the warm water. Then hand rub with 3m or other prof. grade rubbing compounds, coruse then pollishing, wax after a months cure, looks like this when done

      Rick:
You want to use a hardener with the enamel that will make it dry faster, harder and make it gas proof. Your paint store should sell that along with reducer. Also a two part epoxy primer will work best over old paint, metal or body filler before you put your paint on. If you use a solid non-metalic color you can wet sand and buff it after it cures for a real shine like OME... You can't finish wet sand metalic enamel unless you put clear coat, but you don't need to clear coat single stage solid colors if you use hardener.
      Good luck and post pics!

        True

All good, but it sounded like you have already painted it If so, the steps I gave will work If you sprayed a metalic coat, I HOPE you did 2 coats of clear, otherwise, it will not hold up well, if only solid color coats, you can still fix with the sand and buff thing. Mine is jet black (solid color coat), but I still did 2 hardend clear coats for gloss and durability

              Hi Rick,
if it's the primer showing through, fizz on another coat.
If it's got runs in it, wet sand them off and fizz on another coat.
But how bad is it really? Does it look OK from 3 feet away? For me, that'd be good enough.

Thanks to all for your eagerness to help. It is much appreciated.
                  I was pretty bummed.
                  Here now the photo.

The story that goes with the photo.
the chips in the top of the tank are from debris that got on the tank when painting. I make a make shift spray both in my garage with tarps and wet the floor to try to prevent this.
The day I shot it was in the low 50's F outside I had a small electric heater so I was fairly certian the temp was over 60 degrees F

I'm using a PPG enamel with hardener. The Toyota code which marches indigo Blue.

The side damage happened when I attempted to apply the striping some 30hrs. after shooting the paint.

Thanks again for your advise and recomendations.

At this point and with that damage, all you can do is wet sand the tank smooth and start over; trying to 'fix' it will be a waste of time. You don't have to sand all the paint off, but keep in mind that the thicker the paint is, the more prone to chipping it will be. You also don't want to use too fine of a sandpaper before spraying the color coat or the base won't have enough 'tooth' for the paint to grip. I'd suggest 320 grit, no finer than 400.

If you're planning on spraying catalyzed clear over the color coat and striping, you're supposed to do that within about 16 hours of applying the color coat or the clear won't chemically bond properly to the color. This is true of all catalyzed paint; too long between coats will cause issues. I'll also note that if the paint you're using has any metallic or pearl in it, you cannot color sand it or it will end up blotchy. You must apply clear over it to do that.

Just a thought, but if trying to tape off the tank for striping lifted the color coat, you need to sand it all off as it didn't adhere properly to your primer coat. Most common reasons for that are spraying over primer without proper sanding of primer/ primer not completly dried and holding vapor/ wrong primer for the topcoat and / or topcoat reducer is not the right temp range for the temp you sprayed. Not trying to give bad news, but better to fix it right now then end up here again.

Yeah, I thought so. That's why I try to stick to solid colors for my home paint jobs as they're waaay more forgiving... You can color-sand the dust/bugs out if it's not too bad.

I would recommend a good 2 pt clear coat shot from airgun as a final protector against fuel. It is super easy to do and you get a nice glass finish with no worries when fueling up, JMHO. Costs about $35 for enough to do tank and sidecovers.
