I tried this today, I had a mirror that had some pitting and rust on it. Took a can of Coke, poured a little in small bowl, and the rest into a glass of bourbon (an essential step ). Dipped the aluminum foil in the Coke, and it took the rust off in a hurry without scratching or damaging the chrome. NICE!
Hit it with some Simichrome and a buffing cloth after, and it looks fantastic.
Today I had the petcocks off and notice that the label plate was a little rusty. So I had a little lipton tea and tin foil and 3 mins later. Viola!

Of course, it's not going to do anything about the pitting, but damn it took the rust right off.
