Don't usu steelwool!
Don't use steel wool! Dulls the chrome. The best way I have found is a good chrome cleaner and lots of elbow grease I use Turtle Wax chrome cleaner, i am sure there are many other fav's out there. Once you are done, "Wax often" or it comes right back. For realy hard to remove rust, you can use the superfine scothbright pads (availbule at autobody supply only) not the hardware store kind, with chrome cleaner, will dull some, but will look better then rust

Chrome polish and elbow grease, and for the bad spots and/or the hard-to-get-areas, a small wire 'toothbrush' with polish. The brass ones work best as they don't leave scratches as much as the stainless steel ones...
I've also discovered that if you have a buffing set-up, some tripoli compound on a sewn cotton buff will polish out rust and even scuff marks to a degree, just don't get heavy-handed.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

aluminum foil
How does a wadded up piece of tin foil get rust out?
Wouldn't it scratch like steel wool? Albeit, a little softer of course.
No Polish with that foil?

I have used the wadded up aluminum foil with chrome polish and it does work really nice.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

+1 for foil
Aluminum foil with water works like majic for taking rust off chrome. It will not restore chrome that is no longer there due to heavy rust though. I think that it works because the aluminum is not as hard as chromium, but harder than the rust, so no scratches.LuckyEddie
