YES! I forgot to mention this, the plug I received was also much longer than the original, and from looking at the used oil pan I have nearby, probably engages the deeper threads in the pan. I've taken mine out already twice to do a flush and an oil change, and it screws back in and snugs up without a problem. I have the oil pan on hand to replace if necessary, but if it keeps holding up, I don't think it will be.

And no more drip directly onto my exhaust anymore .

That's the one. How my multiple searches for "oversize drain plug" and "Drain plug" and "oversize" and "m14 x 1.5" didn't turn it up I will never be able to explain :P.

jat, next time you need to tap a bolt
throw sum grease on the threads, itll help catch
          most of the shavings.

            Napa

I had to look it up on this site and bring the number back to the Napa site :

            http://www.dmauto.com/web/dmauto/Cat...++++++/1/1006/

On this site they refer to the piggyback 7041909 as an oversize plug so it may thread into the hole our 7041362 has cut but this is only speculation .

Ahh grease - doh ! My brain has been on vacation this month . I should at least remember to check here before performing repairs .

You may be all done fooling with this by now, but when I stripped mine, I bought a slightly oversized brass fitting that had a threaded interior, tapped the stripped oil pan aluminium hole to fit and locktited it in, and a brass plug to fit the inner threads of the brass insert, so now I'm brass to brass rather than steel to aluminium.

As I was doing this on the bike, I greased up a chunk of paper towel and stuffed it in the hole to catch the metal shards, pulled it out with foreceps, and then rinsed the pan with the soon-to-be-replaced oil to make sure I got them all.

                new and improved ?

Seems I ordered an updated? version :

No built-in washer ,4 cutting slots , small-ass inner plug with 11mm cap.
Large hex size is still 24mm .
                Hmm.

                  more on this

I just got my replacement oil pan in the mail . My old OEM drain plug is about 15mm from cap to tip ( thread portion) and doesnt reach all of the threads available in my XJ pan . There is a second set of threads in the pan after a small oil drain section . There is approx. 5mm more to take advantage of .

                  Thread area:

Plug threaded in finger tight(no washer):

                    Good pics

And as you can see from them, using one of those semi-permanent plugs will block the drain slot, so you'll never again fully drain the pan and the flotsam and jetsam will build up.

                    Just a thought.

                            so far

Happy Spring ! The 1st O/S plug leaked constantly so this year I installed the plug with the plug in it . Red loctite and it seems good so far . I didn't dare torque it to the 31 ft/lbs as it seemed not to want to get any tighter than about 21 ft/lbs . So I'm glad I have the pan now that I've heard the engine can stay in to change it . It will be part of the exhaust job somewhere down the line.
