I know the Midnight Special is 'special' and all, but that doesn't make any sense?!?
    Part number research reveals:
3H3-24500-01-00 same part number for the SH and LH, LG and SG and the 82 XJ
Well, I know the petcock is slightly different on the MNS's, as it is black, but I doubt they would have changed the design. What I'm thinking is the hole in the tank might have been different.

    However:

That is exactly what I see on mine. I wonder why some tanks have a different size hole...

...has a raised lip that is a recessed fit into the petcock
Thanks Phil, Once again I learned something new about these wonderful machines.
I haven't had a chance to take apart my petcocks on Scarlet yet, If I had, I probably would have known that little bit of info.

So I guess the standard are the only ones that have the problem of the tower falling off.

The cap on top is another story. I do like Steve's fix for that though.

        Thanx, Phil,

That's good to know. I believe my XS650 petcock is identical to the one on the left side of the XS11 standard. After I fished the standpipe out of the tank, I pressed it back in without any adhesive, and it has been fine for a long time.

Marty, I just check the parts list and indeed all the 650's left petcock are the same as the left on the standards.
          3G1-24500-03-00

That's good info in case I ever need a left petcock. I can get one from MikesXS.
I guess the rebuild kit for the 650 would probably work for both side of the standards eh?

Rebuild kits will be the same. XS650 petcocks will work on both sides of the XS1100 standard, but operation will be reversed. Many XS650's ran two petcocks, but I think the left is the only available replacement, unless the dealer has them.

              inside

How did it get inside the tank if it won't fit through to petcock hole in the tank

Because Marty's got a Standard and those filters are pressed into the petcock housing and can fall out. Mine did once.

Bug has a Special and they are recessed into the petcock housing and have the lip and thus can't come out.

Hope this straightens it all out for all that have read this.

Not a problem on the standards, as those filters are held in with a rivet...
Hmm, mine aren't held in by a rivet, neither my originals, replacements nor my XS400 petcock (which is the same as the left side XS1100 standard petcock) is held in by a rivet, but rather is just a tight press fit. Now mine are ALL 1980 models, so that may have something to do with it.

Oh, and I've had to fish more than one of them out of my tank at one time or another too.

I suspect it may be the 78 and/or 79 ones that were held in by a rivet, cause none of the standard petcocks I've worked on have ever had a rivet in them, but they have all been 1980 or later (I think, one MIGHT have been a 79 but I'm not sure, they came in the tank I bought, which may have been a 79 tank but I'm not sure).

I'll admit I haven't seen a verifiable '80-81 standard petcock, but the known '78-79 versions I've seen all have the filter held in with a rivet.

That rivet also makes getting the filter off the body a real PITA....

                          Steve,

I have nothing to refute your information. I have some earlier XS650s, but they don't sport their original petcocks. Seems they should have left well enough alone.

Ok, here's a pic of a standard petcock with what's left of the rivet....

                            [IMG][/IMG]

Plainly visible, I ground the head off to salvage the filter off it (the body is hopelessly corroded). Now, the interesting part is this particular piece is off a Venturer tank (a '81 model) that was also super-nasty inside. Is the petcock original to the tank? Who knows... it looked fairly obvious that the petcock had been on the tank a long time, but I got this tank in a parts swap, I never saw the bike.
