OK, call me stupid
The cap never fell off in the tank like I thought, what I heard was the low fuel elec. socket ratteling againest the tank
By the way, when I hooked it back up I checked the light before I filled and it doesn't come on anymore
Worked fine before I removerd and repainted the tank. I took off the sender before painting, so I don't get it
