As some of you know, I am "Trying" to get my bike as "like new" as possable While rebuilding my petcocks last night I heard the top fall inside the tank from one of the filters / screens So I decided to fix so it couldn't fall off again. I took it out and tried to run a small pice of wire through the screen on both sides at the top to twist it over the cap to hold it in place. Well the screen riped Do any of you have an extra petcock filter / screen for a 79 SF that I could buy for a few bucks, new one's are $$ And any pointers on how to "permenitly" attach the top that constently baths in gas Thanks

No spare filters (that are any good that is...), but I had the same problem on the SG filters; I fixed it by pressing the top in place, then 'spot welding' it with a soldering iron...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

I have an XS650 with the identical petcock to the XS1100 standard. I'm sure it's the same plastic pressed in standpipe/screen as the Special. The XS650, being a 360 degree parallel twin, vibrates a good bit more than the XS11. My standpipe vibrated out, just as yours did. I figured it out when I needed "RESERVE" and there was none. I removed the petcock, and carefully pressed the standpipe back in. No hammer, no glue, no welding. I've been riding the bike for several years since, and it's still fine. When you get a replacement, carefully press it in place. If the fit is snug, leave it alone. It will be fine for a very long time, or maybe even forever, as far as you are concerned.Marty (in Mississippi)

I may be wrong on this, but I thought the towers were held in be pressing against outside of the tank. I know mine are... The lower lip on the filter tower gets squeezed between the petcock and the tank. Unless the hole for the petcock has been enlarged for some reason, it shouldn't possible for them to fall into the tank...1980 XS850SG - Sold

Nope, they can fall out.... BTDT. If you've got a filter that won't stay in the petcock body, try using some 'gas tank repair' epoxy. This will take the fuel exposure.
Not a problem on the standards, as those filters are held in with a rivet...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Maybe mine is unique then. The size of the petcock hole on my tank is not big enough to allow the tower to fall off. Just installing the petcock holds the tower on. Maybe it's an LH thing, like the brakes? Do the XJ's have the same problem with the towers falling off?1980 XS850SG - Sold

The tower on my 79 Special has a raised lip that is a recessed fit into the petcock. The hole on my fuel tank is too small to let this lip thru and up into the tank.
