  • picked up a 1980g

over the weekend i picked up a 1980g, the po had partly
stripped the bike with the intention of doing it up which never
eventuated, i got it for $400, the bike was mostly complete,
he had butchered the wiring loom, im using a loom from my
81rh, he had butched the pick up coil wires, the brakes are shot and will need rebuilding, he put the wrong spark
plugs in, put a wrong size allen bolt into the timing case and
cracked the upper case housing(repairable), had dripped brake
fluid over a lot of the parts he had crated up (headlight cover
tach/speedo and other bits and pieces, i was a bit dissapointed in that
the engine and frame numbers dont match tho both the frame and engine
    are 80 models.
the good news is ive got most of the parts from my spare rh to get the bike running.
heres a few pics, i really like the standard and ill more than likely do a ground up resto on it.

these were the carbs that came off the bike, not sure what there off originally tho.

    80g

Pete.. Not sure that is an 80G?? It has the rear cowling on the seat and the foot pegs look to be 78/79. Somone correct me if I'm wrong?? Is it possible the European models had the cowling??

      hi foreda,
the engine and vin numbers start with 3x1 and date of manufacture
say thats its an 80 model, this is my first standard so not sure what the
      differences would be between countries.

foreda, just saw a thread u posted a little while back
about the 80 u purchased, nice bike btw, i noticed the
foot pegs on urs are in a different location than mine, the pegs
on my 80 sit up a little higher and further back than the us models
same is on my rh model.
one of the guys on the aussie site has an 80g that also has the rear
seat cowl, so it maybe a stock fitting for the bikes over here.

IIRC all the European standards had the cowling no matter the year. Only in the North American market did they get rid of the cowling and I believe even change the seat pan etc, the standards being pretty much the same frame and such through the whole run unlike here where only 78 and 79 were static with it morphing from there becoming more and more special like, with the H even using the special exhaust and mounting points but still with the standard tank writ large and the fairing as standard equipment.

Europe didn't really have a special, not like the North American special at least, as it was really just an optioned up standard, no different frame and exhaust like we got.

Pete, those pickup coils won't work correctly.

The timing plate and coils have to move freely, like a Lazy Susan, and the thick replacement wires that have been put on there with heavy tape/shrink tubing won't allow the vacuum advance to do its job.

Try to find something flexible like multimeter wires and don't solder them, just use a barrel crimp and only add enough tape or shrink tubing to keep the joint from shorting.

            Other than that: Nice find!

              hey scott,
yeah i know, i just posted that pic from what the po attempted to do
with his fix for the pick ups, ive used a spare set from my parts bike that works,
in that same pic the po had used the incorrect plugs luckily the plugs had a
short reach and im hoping no damage has been done.

ive got all the wiring sorted out except ive go no headlight, tho the pass button activates the high beam, this isnt the type that needs the engine running for the headlight to come on? it has an off/park/on switch, the parking lights all work.

                Pete,

Look between the coils under the tank. See if the headlight relay is in there. If you have not seen one yet, they are square and have a four wire connector. IF the relay is there, then the headlight will not come on until the alternator is providing juice.

Yes Pete, I recently pick up a 80G with very low mileage and am not too far for completing restoration. Only thing left is repaint, find new seat cover and new tires. This one is going to look as good as my 78.I'll post some pics when I'm done.
I was thinking ther were differences between Eoro and American models but did not know what all the differences were. Have fun with the restore.

thanx don, i used the wiring loom from my 81rh so there would be no
relay there, guess ive got more looking to do, other than that everything
is working electrically at this stage.

im not sure of all the differences either at this stage, same with the 81 special and my 81 rh, theres a few differences there as well.

ur 78 looks real sweet, im sure ur 80 will come up looking just as good.
