  • Hot rear disc

i thought i had my smokin rear brake problem fixed. R&R'd total rear system, installed new pads, fluid, cleaned spooge in MC and inspected and lubed caliper piston with fluid, etc. when reinstalling rear torque bar and caliper bracket, i found the disc wasnt lined up in the middle of the caliper groove. it was rubbing on the right side, should be centered, right? well i know there r no axle washers missing cause it didnt have any. starting from the wheel side to the outside hole of the torque bar where u install axle, i have the following parts.

    1) chrome wheel collar
    2) rear caliper bracket
    3) torque bar
    4) 3mm empty space that looks like theres a missing washer on left
    inside of torque bar
this is an 81sh, but i think most years r the same. someone
please look at urs and tell me if u have any washers and if ur disc is
centered in the caliper. appreciate ur help, im losin it!

Check that the torque bracket is in the grommet groove in the swingarm post.

You LIST sounds correct including the empty space

Here's a pic of the parts needed for the two types of rear wheels....

      [IMG][/IMG]

On the left is the parts needed for a 16" rear wheel, and the right the 17". If any of your parts don't look like these, you've got a wrong part. The specials didn't have a chrome collar/spacer, only the standards, so it sounds like somebody has used the wrong bits. Mix any of these, and a mis-aligned caliper will be the result....

          rear disc HOT

hey Crazy S, great pix! can u describe the difference between em! ill bet thats the problem and the Specials i hope are wider so i can try to custom fit a washer to straighten the disc/caliper alignment. otherwise ill have to try to find one and i know its an unavailable part.

Ok, if you have a 16" rear wheel, that's the right parts (and from what I can see, you do). Now, for what it's worth, I have ran into some brake rotors that had more 'dish' (about .060") than 'normal' rotors, or about the amount you're off. The ones I've run into were always installed on the front, and my best guess is they were used to correct poor tolerance stack on the production line. Yamaha does not list any 'other' part number for rotors.

You have two choices for a fix; try swapping the rear rotor for the right front (assuming it has the right dish), as you can 'adjust' the forks to allow for rotor dish. Or you can get a large washer thick enough to space the caliper bracket out enough and install it between the wheel spacer and the bracket. I'll note that the front/rear rotors are supposed to be the same dimensionally (except for the left/right slots), so there's no issue with moving them.

The only other thing it could be would be if you have some bent parts, but that will be very hard to tell from pics.

its the chrome collar next to the hub, except thats the wrong one. it shouldnt be chromed, just base metal finish.

                  Hi Michael,
what you need is a "Bro with lathe" to turn that collar down a bit.
Or buy a fistful of plain washers and stack them to fit.

I straightened out a swingarm on a Kawasaki LTD 550 with some oil filter washers once... worked great.

Hope you can get it sorted out,

                      just rebuilt this whole bike.
Then is it likely you have the right part laying around or installed somewhere else?

No, you have the right parts; that inner spacer isn't chromed, it's cad plated. The chrome spacer was only used on the standard and is shiny.

You've got either a rotor with the wrong dish, or bent parts....

                          Tornado Hit Chicago

i was down for 24hrs, trees, power lines etc down, but was still able to work on my bike. found a set of machine bushings with the possibly the correct thickness, installed 1 between the wheel bushing and the caliper bracket. that seemed to push the bracket over just enoughto allow the disc the move to the center. what a relief! test drove her and it seems to have corrected the misalignment, but not convinced quite yet. if u try to put a washer with a certain larger thickness, u may misalign enough so that the axle wont go in all the way or the axle goes all the way thru, but u cant get the cotter pin in. trials and errors, but i think i got it. heres the updated pix 4 all to see. thanks everybody 4 ur help. Ride On!

How helpful this will be, I do not know. But BTH...

Here are two pictures. The first is Succubus, my unaltered 79F with a 17" wheel. The second is Incubus, my 79F that has a 16" wheel. Note the difference in the spacers used. IIRC, both bikes use the Standard brake torque plate. Note also - if there is any chrome down there, it is disguised to prevent the glare from blinding oncoming cagers....:
