  • Petcocks?

Hello XSives! I found a replacement petcock on Ebay for my faulty left petcock and its only about $25 which seems to be the price of a rebuild kit but it says it's for a special. It looks the same as mine but I figured I'd better check to make sure it will fit before bidding. What do you think?

Petcocks from Standard and Special won't interchange, different bolt spacing. Maybe it was listed wrong though, if you post a link someone can tell you.

That's for a Special, and won't fit a standard tank. Incomplete too; the hose barbs are missing, and aren't generally replaceable as they're pressed-in...

Which fuel tank do you have? The larger 'bread box' standard tank, with it's flush fuel cap, or do you have a Special tank with the conventional surface-mount cap? Tank swaps are common.

You might want to just bite the bullet and get a rebuild kit, as anything used you may buy may not be any better than what you have...

That looks like the winner. It looks to be for a Standard tank and even has the filter tower in place.

S*** that one got bought...guess I'll just get the kit but what I'm worried about is in all the kits I see there are two cross sections in the big oval rubber o-ring on top and my petcocks do not have a slot for those sections.

Mine look like yours. The kits I have seen often show the partitioned piece but don't come with it cause they use a stock picture, not an actual picture of the kit. I believe the special uses the partitioned one though, so make sure your getting the right kit and not one for a special, and if your going to do the kit, get both kits, georgefix sells a set in a pair so you can do both sides at the same time, and they are right, I've installed one of his kits, you MIGHT need to stretch the spring a little to get them to seal when the engines not running but that's the only issue I saw.

Interesting... they changed the design of the standard petcock after at least '79. Yours are definitely standard versions, but without the 'partition' in the sealing o-ring. All of my standard petcocks have that weird o-ring, and the filter tower is different too. The filter is held in with a rivet, not a press fit... it's a bitch to get out.

Unless these are off some other Yamaha and happen to be very similar...

By "partition" you mean the two like cross bars in the big oval shaped o ring on top right? That's what I'm having trouble finding in a kit they all have those two cross sections.

Yeah my 78 petcocks are different as well. Mine have the partitioned o ring and the different tower like steve is talking about.

Even if the kit came with the partitions you could just trim the pieces off anyways.
