Can someone please tell me where i can get floats fr my 79 xs11 special? I have looked all over and all i can find are rebuild kits but the do not come with the floats. I have one that has a hole by where the float is welded to the holder.

Partsnmore.com shows this brass float when you search Yamaha; XS1100 and then Universal, first page below air filters:

    Carb Float #20-6500
Brass Carb Float Fits VM29/33 Smoothbores & most OEM CV/VM Mikuni carbs Used on Yamaha & Kawasaki up to 1980 $13.00 ea.
However, the above float has the same part # as the ones on MikesXS.net, and I've read where folks have stated that those floats do NOT fit/work on the 1100 carbs?

Others have reported that you can use the newer plastic type floats in the older carbs. But I think they had to bend the floats a little inwards to keep them from rubbing/hanging on the float bowl walls!

    Hopefully others will chime in.

MikesXS has floats for Mikuni BS38 carbs. I don't know if they fit our BS34 carbs but it might be a place to check.

          Floats

Well I've been puttering away with my carbs for a week now. To sick to do much else. I've discovered a couple things. First thing is don't order the plastic floats that come from tiwain or china. Each float is different not only from each other but also from one side to the other on the same float. Where the my old brass ones are all the same. Using the center of the pivot point as datum, the brass ones measure 27 mm to the bottom of the brass. The plastic measured 32.8mm give or take a 1.5 mm. So if you wanted to achieve the same fuel hieght in the bowl with the plastic, the measurement would be 22-23mm. Problem is the plastic floats bottom out on the main cross over tunnel at about 22.7mm. Now I know they are solid so I'm going to grind down the floats so I can hit 22mm without touching the cross over and try to make both sides the same. Now "Bullet" uses a different plastic float that may be drop in capable. Dan if your out there chime in with your source and part number.
I'm putting my old brass ones back in for now and just testing on a spare set.
Also of some interest. I measured my original float valves with washers from bottom of the washer face up to the top of the spring loaded pin. The original valves and pins measured 9.37mm, new replacements 8.31mm and the viton tipped assemblies measured 9.03mm. To make a long story short, 25.7 mm float heights need to adjusted accordingly. Nothing is hard and fast anymore.

Mike\'s XS brass floats will be for BS38 carburetors. The XS650 went to BS34 carburetors when they were all plastic floats, IIRC. I can\'t say how close the float bowls are between BS38 and BS34 carbs.

Ran into this while doing a bit of float research and thought I would update the thread for anyone looking for float info.
The XS650 used BS38s from 1970 to 1979. In 1980 the bikes sold in North America switched to BS34s. 1980 only BS34s used brass floats. 1981 through 83 they had plastic floats. The BS34 floats do not fit into BS38s and vice versa. You can interchange brass and plastic floats in BS34s but will need to use the appropriate float height. The Mikes XS carb parts of all types are generally avoided by the XS650 guys, as mentioned, they are poorly made Chinese knock offs. I believe Sudco sells better quality parts, but they also list some floats that are suspiciously cheap..... Probably a very bad part to be cheap about.

JBM sells replacement diaphragms for BS34 and BS38 carbs
              http://jbmindustries.com

There are some replacement needle valves for BS34 that can be adjusted and you can add a small washer under seat in the slide that richens the BS34s a tad, that helps with just off idle stumble in the XS650 anyways.

Sirius Consolidated Inc has a variety of floats to offer in plastic. I assume they're from varying sources and maybe quality. (They offer genuine Mikuni.) They also offer the brass floats. My limited experience with this vendor has been excellent.
