how do you actually go about measuring the clearance or alignment of the swing arm?

Using a caliper measure the gap between the frame and the swing arm on left and right sides. There should be no more than 1.6mm 0.062in. Difference between left and right side gaps.
To adjust, remove chrome caps loosen locknuts,loosen the shaft with the greater gap 1/2 turn at a time tighten the opposite side to 43-52 foot lbs.
Check gaps when they are good tighten lock nut to 72lbs.

RickThat's inch pounds! That is a misprint in some manuals and if you crank it down that tight you may well fubar your frame. The lock nut is correct, but the 43-52 is inch pounds (and double checking it I found it is correct in my yamaha factory manual).

I was thinking couldn't a feeler gauge be used?
Is 1 inch pound 1/12 of a foot pound?

Yes, but at those levels, unless your using a cheap dial or bar type torque wrench, they don't go that low unless it's an inch pound wrench anyways. But it's good to know the conversion cause you can go the other way for low foot pound stuff with an inch pound wrench.Cy
