miles per tank load

Hey Jeff,

Are you talking till you hit reserve and see the red light?
Also, are you talking city stop and go vs. highway?

Lots of variables will contribute or detract from your mileage, but 30Mpg is common, but others have gotten as high as 40.

If you're heavy wristed, lots of stop/go, full dress rig/windshield, can all cause drops in MPG. Proper tuning and balancing of carbs, clean intake filter, slightly leaner set floats, strong ignition system, and not cranking it up on every take off can help get you more mpg...but the last one can take the fun out of riding!?

I usually get the red light to come on at about 80 miles. However, almost all my riding is stop & go (1.3 mile commute to work). If I take a long ride on the freeway, keeping to the speed limit, I get about 110 before the red light comes on.

when i filled it, it took exactly 10 litres, was pretty happy with that.

I'm just around 190 kms to reserve with - approx 225 kms to empty & thats a good guess by a certain fill up last yr - but thats highway at 100 kms per hour to work/day. Faster than that up here = ticket. Thx to Tinman905 sync & carbs. NO real stop & go town driving up here. My town only has one major stop sign if you hit the right way - Dan

On my E, Pacifico fairing (the big one), my 245 lbs, on the highway at 75-80 MPH, 750 final drive, Venturer 6.5 gallon tank....... 200 miles to gauge reading 'empty'. I wasn't to reserve yet.

My LG with the 1200cc kit and jetted too rich, about 100 miles to 'the light'.

No highway involved, just cruising the twistie hilly local roads, I was at just under 110 when it started sputtering last night. About .5 gallon went to trying to get a set of carbs to stop leaking.

I put about three gallons in a week and a half ago and the gas light came on today at only 65 miles and then i filled it back up with three gallons. So basically if my math is corrct I only got 20mpg! That can't be good i'm only about 200 lbs what should I do? Does it need some carb work or something?

Hey Wild,

Probaby carb, valve clearance, ignition work, to get every system to it's maximum potential. Also, brakes to be sure you're not getting too much brake drag.

Also, can't recall how long you've had the bike, how many miles on the engine, whether it sat for a long time....partially stuck rings? They may need to be reseated with several hundred miles worth of riding!?

A fellow XSive and I took a trip to Indianapolis from my house in western Cincinnati. We both have Special models, his 80 mine 81. We filled up together at a station near me. About half way to Indy, he ran out of gas. About 56 miles IIRC. He was having carb issues and so he decided to open up his plag gap to counter it. Needless to say, he closed the gap back up in Indy. Made it home on one tank of gas.
