    Another carb folly

    When cleaning the carbs I soaked all of the seats (the brass things with the little screen filters on them) in carb cleaner...was that a bad idea? because it seems that all of the rubber o-rings on them have swelled up and they wont fit back into the holes, and they are very brittle. I took them all off. I need to get new ones obviously, anyone have a part number for the o-rings?

    I just took one of the seats to my local NAPA and they had o-rings that fit. No special rings required other than fuel resistant.

      As mentioned, a good auto parts store should be able to match them up. Or Bikebandit, $3.82 a pop.

        the boys have u covered with the 'o' rings,

        if uve had them sitting in carb cleaner might
        not hurt to get a q tip dibbed in a bit of polish
        and cleaning the inside of the seat up where the
        needle is going to sit.

          Sounds good, I think I also need some new needles, the rubber "cone" on the tip of the one is worn down to the point where metal is showing. Only on one though, should I replace them all for good measure or just the one?

            Given what it takes to pull the carbs off, and get back into the float bowls, and the issues that develop when those valves leak like possible fire I think I would go ahead and replace all four while your in there.

                  The older model carbs use all metal needle valves, but the later model carbs use carbs with viton tipped needles, which look like rubber. This seals better and actually tends to last longer, but when they wear out, they are REALLY worn out.

                    Those with older metal needle set-ups can upgrade to the rubber-tipped valves. XV920 , IIRC. BTW, this is only for the screw-in valves.
