    hey cy,

its what i was taught at tech, and have done engine rebuilds
in the past al be it was a few years ago,
    but each to there own,
was only throwing it out there.

ive also noticed valvoline make a running in oil
its 30 weight mono, but i dont kno wat the difference would
be compared to the standard 30 weight oil.

I remember being told that way back in High School as well, but I also remembered having been told different later. Last time I looked, I couldn't even FIND an oil that I would feel comfortable putting in one of these engines in a single grade non-detergent oil. But then there are a lot of things the rest of the world (and even the U.S.) gets that we in Kalifornia can't get/have access to. We get crappy paints and stuff like that, because it's worse for us than for anybody else, so we have to use paints that don't last more than a few years (that's why even in the old days nobody wanted a camaro made in the Ca plant, the paint was junk and would delaminate and fade badly).

might not have been just the detergents, the other thing is that it also has no
friction modifiers in the oil at all.

          just did a quick search
penrite also does a running in oil
but theyve changed the viscosity to 15-40
heres a link if ur interested

I saw at ace hardware they have some non detergent mono grade oils. Been a few weeks since I looked but I think they had 20 30 and 40. They weren't air tool and compressor oils either.

Shouldn't be using anything with friction modifiers on these bikes anyways, it's gonna have a really high chance of causing clutch slippage.

                  Loose screw

Here's a small screw and washer from the right hand controls after bouncing around in the cylinder:

Here's the head after forging that screw into a lump:

Here's the top of the piston:

Sucks, yeah, but not as bad as it might have. The cylinder walls are OK. I think I can wire wheel the head a little and put it back together when I get my gaskets. I'm going to try the cam chain tensioner replacement again. I might swap on the HD mufflers I bought eight years ago as well, since the exhaust is off the bike.

I have no idea how I got the screw in there, but I remember having to find a screw from a partzer I have when I repaired the cut-off switch. My wife says I should try out for "Minute to Win It", as they specialize in launching tiny parts into tiny holes from a distance. Apparently that is a hidden skill I have.

You might be ok for a time but I would bet eventyally your going to get hot spots that develope and eventually burn a hole in the piston, head might me ok but same thing could happen. I would start looking for a new set of piston and a cheap head.

You know, that is not the way I would tap the threads for the 8 sparkplug performance mod but it does look pretty spectacular; almost the same as what happened to my Toyota engine.

that sux, but like u said couldve been much worse,
u might also want to check the valve seats and valves
by pouring fuel in the ports and check for seapage/leaks.

depending on what u want to do with the bike (keep it or sell it)
and how much money you want to spend on it, you could probably
clean it up and get away with it for a bit.
