It's always possible the previous owner changed the seat over to a 79. Have a look at your right side clutch cover , if it has a splined shaft for a kick starter just above your foot peg than your engine is a 79 and if your numbers match then you have a 79 . My ownership states mine is a 80 G but it is a SG things can get mixed up over time.BDF Special
80SG Vetter bagger 1196 Wiseco big bore kit, Mega Cycle Cams, slotted cam gears, ported and flowed head, bronze intake seats, Dyno Jet kit, Dyno coils and Mikes XS air pods, Venture cam chain adjuster,Geezer's regulator, Clutch mod, Mac 4 into 1 with custom built and tuned baffle, Oil cooler,MikesXS emulators mod.
Dyno tuned to 98 hp at the rear wheel.

It's the frame that matters. the engine does not matter, it could be any year. you need to compare the neck vin to that list in the link. then you will know what year and model seat you need to look for.Nathan

Didn't read all the way through before I responded. its just pretty common that people tell others to look at something other than the vins to tell what they have, and that gets things muddled.
Sorry tinman.Nathan

seat
I took a seat from an 81 MNS, trimmed the area above the side covers to an almost straight line, and put it on my 79 Special. Had to loosen the cover and cut the sheet metal, re-install the cover, and have a very comfy seat, and everything fits up nicely. If you need a pan for an SF, ANY special pan can be trimmed to clear the side covers.Last edited by rover; 01-17-2011, 11:43 AM.put something smooooth betwen your legs, XS eleven
