Psycoreefer did his by hanging the bike from the garage rafters by the front end, so he could do the fix standing/sitting with the trans right at face level. It seems to me that this would be the easiest way to do it, and the way I'm likely to try and use if I have to do this (that said, my current engine has not exhibited the issue although the original did, but it's bad rod bearings caused me to use the simpler fix of replacing the gears by replacing everything else around them at the same time )

I'm told the other one I have sitting in my garage has not exhibited the problem either, but we'll see how it goes when it finally goes in, whenever that is.

I always pulled the engine and split the cases... less hassle prolly.
      Weekend job.
1st time was, when I got my first XS and the bike was in pieces anyway. I got new 2nd gear with the bike and I put it in, together with new camchain etc....

2nd time the tranny decided to eat some teeth off the 3rd gear. Replaced the whole tranny with one off ebay.

3rd time was after I sold the bike to a friend and he swapped the bottom case and 5th gear was fubar. We swapped the 5th gear cogs with ones from the 3rd problem gear tranny.

4th time it was a 2nd gear dremel fix on my "parts" bike.

Like I said...weekend job, you just need some patience, some tools, coffee, cigarettes and a friend.
If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.

Was just reading about your adventure Marty. You're gonna get everything back together just right...
I've always wondered about this turning the bike upside down thing ever since first reading about it. Please let us know if that's how you would do it if you could have a re-do.

          Dean,

My only issue has been time to commit to the job. I can not imagine messing with this thing while lying on the floor. Yes, if I had a re-do, the bike would still be on its back.

Countershaft in and everything rotates fine. It shifts fine, too. There is no metric o'ring in this town unless I have a Guzzi part number. I'm also missing the spring and washer for under the oil filter. That's the trouble with leaving things apart.

My wife says, "One project at a time!" Perhaps I'll be better off if I do as she says.

Get ahold of TC and get his SOFA unit (as soon as he's ready to do another run that is), it's well worth both the money and the effort. It's a nice quality job of machining and really makes for both a nice look and cleaner oil changes. Plus you don't have to keep track of that stupid spring and washer.

Which O-ring do you need, filter or pump? If you can't find your spring and washer, I probably got an extra or 2.

Oh, thinking about it, if it's for the filter I have one sitting out in the garage with both o-rings that AFAICT I won't be using now. Of course it would probably cost less just to pick up a filter from Napa if that's what you need. The filter comes with both o-rings in the box.

Thanx guys! I have a new NAPA filter with both o'rings. The compression spring and washer that go under the filter got up and walked off. I went to six auto parts stores a motorcycle shop, hardware store, and plumbing supply looking for the o'ring under the oil pump.

There is no "real" auto parts store in this town or the next one. It seems insane!

Marty, I guess you tried Advance auto for the oil pump O-ring. Did you actually go back and look thru their o-ring drawer yourself? I got my pump O-ring there, they said they didn't have it, so I had to go in the back and find it for myself. If you need the pump O-ring, spring, and washer, I'd be glad to send them to you, shoot me a PM if so.

                        Advance Auto Parts

I went to two Advance Auto Parts stores. One let me run through the bins. The one I need isn't there. I need a CARQUEST or NAPA store!

                          O ring

I got a new one from the local hardware store. It's NOT a metric thing. Took the old one with me and there was a perfect match in the box.

As the oil filters o-rings. Some of the manufacturers give new o-rings, Yamaha does not, they are extra. I bought 10 filters for $50 and there is both o-rings with them all.

                          Filters:
                          Autozone - SP2
                          Napa - PS4933
                          STP - SMO-2

I'm going back to work tomorrow. I'll be gone at least until March 20. Unfortunately, my motorcycle will remain upside down until I return. I sure hope the dog doesn't eat any of the loose parts!

                              Hey Marty,

I checked the package I got several years ago for mine, it's labelled a #14 O-ring, 3/4" ID, 15/16" OD, and 3/32" thick. I'm pretty sure this was it and was used for my Oil Pump.
