Here is a diagram of the 80 valves. All valves should have identical parts, just different thickness shims.

No problem. As for the black and white deposits on the valves, probably just poor carb adjustment/vac leak/etc, as long as there's no oil cake.
Why do you think the final has been swapped?2H7 (79) owned since '89

As I understand it, if you turned the head over without the cams in it, the shims are probably laying on the floor/ground somewhere, they are not wedged in, just sitting in the little cups. This is not good, as it means that you will have to determine the right shims once you find them (as far as which goes where) by trial and error. At least you can shift around till you get as many as you can get correct then you can determine what you need to change the others to.
At least without the cams in, it's not likely that you might have bent any valves (every cloud has a silver lining.).Cy

Cy...the only motorcycle engine I've been inside had the shims under the cups...not on top...
Phil...there was hand engraving on the body...and yellow paint marker on the inside
Now another question...got everything but jug and head to the shop for a bath...they said its a 'hot' acid bath...and expressed concern for the aluminum melting! Course it wasn't the machinist I talked to...will be talking to him in the morning
But they have a 'dishwasher' style that can be used, just won't do quite as good a job....
Any thoughts?
Thanks, John1980 XS11 Special aka The Monster

Just realized I said FINAL drive...
It was the MIDDLE drive...the one that bolts to the engine...and the swingarm.

Same thing on the middle drive.
As for the engine, go with the "dishwasher". You will have to clean a LOT up on your own, but a hot tank WILL eat the aluminum! I know about the dishwasher as I have one of my engines in ALL the bits, waiting for time to start putting it back together.Ray Matteis

Thanks ray...I knew about the dishwasher style, we had one at a transmission shop I was a service writer for....but they called it the hot tank...
Was a little confused! Go figure!
Thanks again...I know I'll have a lot of questions as I reassemble...
