  • Finally, got started on my rebuild project, whew!

So, after being delayed by a number of factors, I got after it today,
It started out as a base gasket leaking badly....the reason for teardown!
But it's gonna be a rebulid, did'nt break a ring or anything, but seeing wear on skirts of pistons, and walls.....
only cracked one fin pulling the head, carb side middle....you'll have to know its there to find it! LOL

I've had the tank and side covers painted, helmets TOO....
    take a look
what do you think, other than the pic is a little blurry

I had them painted....but he used a black base, with a silver/white pearl type...said something about using either saran wrap or aluminum foil to get the marbled look...he called it 'bowling ball' LOL

wasn't too sure how it was gonna turn out at first, but I LOVE it!!!!!

along with the new Jardine exhaust, and polishing all the aluminum covers, and painting the frame,

          it should look AWESOME

Of course, I'm a long ways away from this, BUT,
                PLAN on the 1179 kit
stock airbox, with K&N filter, undrilled as yet
                and the Jardin 4to1 exhaust.....

where is a good starting point for jets, and such?????

I will let someone else speak for certain on the 80 carbs with a BB but I would imagine 1 or 2 up on the idle jet and maybe 3 or 4 up on the main would be a start and leave the needle clip on the center notch.

Got started by setting the tank in place for a minute, just to get a look....
after all, I did just get the parts back last night!

Had to throw a teaser in:

                    just 5 hours later:

still have to pull swing arm and forks....but have to be able to move things quick if needed, it's in a shop for 18 wheelers!!!!

Looks good! Rather than the 1179, I'd go with the 1196, as it 's the same price!
You should NOT need to rejet unless you change the exhaust and airbox.

I dunno... That paint job just looks like it needs a bath... I thought you were showing the primer'd pieces until I realized that they were already glossy. Although, as long as you like it, I guess that's all that really matters.

                          Nate: thanks...

Ray: really, would have thought sure that I'd need to rejet...
Am switching from a 'stock' exhaust...well, I have Hardley Mufflers on!
But not just because of that, bigger bore should need more fuel????
Just can't wrap my brain around that...unless the bigger pistons would allow for more 'draw'????

Bug: thanks for your take....i did ask what was thought...lol
All I can say is that the pics really dont do any justice....
And that I really like it......

Also noticed a little wear on at leat one of the cam journals...normally I'd replace the cam bearings....but....obviously

                            Renegade's restoration

                            Dear Renegade,

Hi, I just realized you are in mid Mich! You might be a "neighbor". I'm in the Lansing area. Maybe we could do a home and home session?

I've got two 1980 XS 1100 Specials that need a lot of work to get back to respectability and I have limited(translation, coward)experience. LOL.

got the motor tore apart the rest of the way,
some of the bearings were showing large amounts of wear, doing this just in time I think...
also noticed a couple of odd things,
it has a different final drive, assuming PO had to have it replaced....

BUT THE ODDEST IS....I rolled the head over, to get a look at the tops of the valves!
cant remember which was which, but intakes on one side were black, exhausts on same side white...(1&2)
it was exactly the opposite on the other (3&4) thought that was odd....
but one of the 'cups' fell out (from on top of the valves) I paniced when I couldn't find the spacer....until I pulled the other 'cups'
NO SPACERS ON ANY OF THEM!!!!!
IF I understand correctly, they SHOULD have spacers????

anyway, just thought I'd toss that at the GURU's and see what happens!

                              Thanks, John
