Ok so after my first fubaring and thanks to Greg I am back on track and have good valves now! So now to the shimming process (again but one cam at a time). I ask the advice of the experts who have done this time and time again. I don't want to have to replace them again in 1000 miles. I did lap the new valves so they have fresh seats and if I understand correctly the valves have a tenancy to seat down a bit after a lapping, so I a thinking about leaving the gaps a bit large in hopes of being in the acceptable range after they seat down. So here is what I have.

        Intake:

        1: has a 265 gap .13 use a 255?

        2: has a 265 gap .076 use a 250?

        3: has a 255 gap .216 could I leave it?

        4: has a .250 gap .155 use a 245?

        Exhaust:

        1: has a 300 gap .305 use a 305?

        2: has a 290 gap .26 could I leave it?

        3: has a 280 gap .36 use a 290?

        4: has a 285 gap .279 use a 290?

        Sounding reasonable?

Just go for the outside edge of the spec setting. If you did the job right they shouldn't move much at all. Closing up would normally be a sign that the fit of the valves after lapping them wasn't as good as you thought, cause if they close up it's because they wore into a better fit.

Ok, I am getting to the carbs now. It is going to have a 4-1 supertrap, k&n filter inside a drilled airbox. According to the recommendation chart on .com I should go up 3 on the mains to 145 and up one on the pilots to 47.5. Any other suggestions for this or dies that sound good?

Then where is the cheapest place to get jets?

IMHO that recommendation is just a starting point and may or may not be close to what you need.

I'd order rebuild kits from George fix on ebay - tell him what size idles and mains you want and he'll include them for free. Then just put all the extra parts in a bag and save them, I've found that just jets tend to cost more then a rebuild "kit"

                  Nate,

Those sizes should get you close. But every bike seems to like things just a little different. Exhaust characteristics, and the K&N filter in a dilled air box, all combine to a slightly different combo than someone with a diff mfg exhaust even. So it will be a bit of trial and change to find the best setup.

As to jets, contact Georgefix and see what he wants per jet. You can also go to your local bike shop and they can order them if they do not have any. You can also try the service department of your local Yammi shop and see if they have any laying around they would like to get rid of or sell off cheap.

I understand that the chart is a recommendation and not an exact hard science. I am just asking, maybe someone had a similar setup and they found that it was way off and have a better suggested starting point. In my head 47.5 sounds a bit large for the pilot but hey , I dont know what I am doing here!

I think that the only way to tell about the pilots is to install, check float levels, synch carbs, and color a clean set of plugs in the idle range of rpms. If the mixture screws are any tighter than 3/4 of a turn out from a lightly seated position, chances are you need to go back down a size on the pilot jets and color spark plugs again. Personally, the easiest thing to do is to see how she runs with the original stock pilot jets. You can get them clean with carb cleaner and a length of super-slinky guitar string (e). ( maybe dental floss?)

Almost at the end here and I am looking for some ideas here. So for my paint, I am going to be doing a yellow as the main color. The knee indents are going to be painted black and I am going to try and do a black pinstripe around the front section of the tank like stock. Then I am going to have a new style yamaha emblem in place is the stock badge.

My question is, what to do on the side covers and rear cover? Been thinking about this for quite some time and can't come up with anything. Throw out any ideas you have!
