  • The Fun Begins

Well she was a complete bike yesterday and now she looks like this.

Planning on pulling the engine out and cleaning the frame and touching up the paint. Really wish I had the money for powder coating but its just not in the cards at the time.

Need to pull the jugs off again and actually put in new rings this time. We will see how Crazy Steve's work on the standard size rings goes otherwise I will have to use my 1st over rings in her. Might as well at least look at the gears while I have the engine out to see what they look like as well.

Give her a new paint job later on this winter and hopefully have the freaking fairing mount from the retard PO and have her on the road again before the snow melts!

I have about 400 pictures so far (remembering what the picture is off is another story though). Ever thing I took off I wrapped the bolts (hopefully to all be replaced with SS though) in tape and labeled what they were for and everything is in ziplock bags labeled with what it is.

So no I probably will still be on here asking "what the heck is this and where does it go?"

If you do that, you should catalog every bolt, nut and washer, and make a list so we all know what bolts to buy if we want to swap every bolt for SS. Someone might be able to make up a "complete" kit (instead of just engine bolts) for others to purchase!

Man that sounds like a lot of work....but a decent idea...

And Larry if I had cash to buy a spare bike I would be powder coating my frame instead! (I know you can get them way cheaper than powdercoating)

Just an option for you Nathan, I took hundreds of bolts, washers, nuts, springs, brackets, etc. to a plater in MPLS where they zinc plated everything for about 75 bucks. I needed to specify "clear" zinc otherwise they would have a bit of a blue tint which is not the factory appearance I wanted. I also found it very handy to have a pile of bolts and hardware I bought on ebay for 25.00. (You've seen where people part out a bike and put all the hardware in a pile and sell it.) Some of those fasteners were in better shape than mine so I picked the best of the bunch for plating. Just a thought.
              Have fun!

P.S. I had mine fully torn down, engine and all for three years before I put it back togehter You'll have no problem, it sounds like your very organized!

Hahaha, me organized! That's a good one. I am far from organized, I am just making a futile attempt to make my life easier layer on, I know it won't work in the end.

Hmmm I do have some 1,2, and 4 barreled Impco propane carbs and some vaporizors. Think I could get a propane tanke shappers like a standards gas tank? Now that would be an interesting conversion!

When I have it all tore down like this would it make sense to pull the swingarm and change its bearings? How bout the steering head bearings? You can get normal taper bearings to replace the individual balls can't you?

The steering head is already tapered roller bearings, as is the swingarm. Replacing them? Only if they need it; these don't wear out as long as you do at least minimal maintenance on them and keep water out. For sure, while you have it down pull the bearings and clean/repack them. You'll have to do the bottom stem bearing 'in place' as you'll usually booger it up getting it off. Probably 98% of all bad swingarm/steering head bearings you'll find will be due to rust damage, with the rest from being run loose far too long, run too tight, or grit getting in and scoring them.

One thing you may find when you clean them is 'lines' on the races. This is common and caused by the limited range of motion these have. As long as the bearing turns smoothly with no 'notchiness' it won't hurt a thing...
