My First Bike...What have I gotten myself into?

My headlight doesn't come on either.last question of the evening. Any ideas on what exhaust that is?

Can anybody tell me what carbs are showing in the pictures? I want to just get parts for them. My stock carbs are going to need a lot of work.

I'm not that familiar with the first set you have pics of there, I did see the stock ones and honestly, they can be gone through in a good day with pipe cleaners, q-tips, some small stiff wire like a guitar string or a wire out of a wire brush and LOTS of carb cleaner. I also use Chemdip (or you choice of manufacture) parts cleaner dip. Comes in a gallon can with the basket in the can. Put all the removable parts that are not rubber in the basket and leave them in there a for a few hours or so, and rinse in some water and dry off.

Also, BEFORE removing carb parts, use PLENTY of PB Blaster or your choice of penetrating oil, and no, WD-40 is not a good substitute.

How about it not having a fuse box?

Oh, the wicked ways of some POs. Banshee came to me without a fuse one in it. Everything form the main fuse on had been removed with the wires crimped together. The fuse box TopCat ( a moderator/member here) sells is the best I have seen for these bikes, and mounts up nicely as well. For $10 including connectors I think it is a great deal!! If you wanted, you can simply buy some stab in conncectors of the same size as the legs of the fuses and put those on the wires to just hook up to the fuses. Not as neat, but it does work. Fuses I think are a MUST!!

If sitting and I can't the bike to go into all of the gears is that part of the 2nd gear issue or is it because the motors not running and kicking oil on the clutch. Also could I just need to adjust my clutch.

The tranny on these bikes work by letting the dogs, or male tabs of one gear insert into corresponding slots or female of the other gear. The tabs can hit the void between slots if the bike is stationary without the engine running. So you may need to rotate the rear wheel slightly, moving the slot and tab alignment, to get it drop into gear. Typically I find I have to do that for all gears when the bike is not running or moving.

As to your headlight, on these bikes Yamaha implemented a "battery saving feature" that does not turn on the headlight until the engine is running. So if you do not get the engine to at least start, the headlight will not light up.

Wow. Don You are the man. thanks for that info. I was thinking of doing the factory carbs just because I know what parts they need but I'm prolly going to need every piece for them. I think the dia's might be good but i doubt it. I'm going this weekend to see if the local bike graveyard can identify what they are off of.

WOW! A TX500! A very fast bike in its time. My buddy bought one new in 1974(?) and I still vividly remember him pulling up beside me as we cruised down the road (me on my 350 Harley) and yelling "Watch this!" He then fell off. To this day I have no idea what he was trying to show me.

Yeah, I still haven't put that one back together. The 2 carbs on it have been a problem since my dad bought it. He spent like $400 at a local shop in the 90's and it still never ran right. It's now been sitting in the garage for 20 years and needs everything replaced. That's why I bought this bike because at least it was recently running. I was totally thinking about throwing an xs650 motor in tx500 frame. I just know the DOHC motor in that bike is a PIA to work on.

Is there any difference between Special carbs and Standard carbs? Are there any recommended sellers?

No differences, just the newer style and older style carbs. Georgefix on eBay OS the one to get parts from for the carbs.

As stated, the Standard versus Special is no difference, there was a fairly in depth change in the styles from the 78-79 model to the 80-81 model. The ones you have look to be the 78-79 style from the pics.

If you want new carb kits, Georgefix is my first go to guy for carb parts. If you want a full set of carbs, I have a set of the 78-79 style fully apart and cleaned up nicely, just need to get the jets and I am upgrading the needle valves and seats to the XV920 type. Only problem with them is one float post is broken right in the middle of where the pin sits, half the seat for the pin is still there.

Honestly, for those who have this same location of break in the post, having worked on these and put the float in with the pin in like that, it is NOT going ANYWHERE and I would have no questions of loading those carbs in my bike as is and riding for the coast with it.

They have been fitted to the bike. I just need to tap the hole where the needle valve goes. Also the scew that goes in the bottom of the bowl. Other than that they are in good shape.

in an attempt to connect the vac advance.

not sure of the valve ur talking about
but ive put a universal choke cable on mine.

while u have them apart could u measure
the spring length for me, check out what main
and pilots jets u have as well tia.
