Looks great - those side covers need to be white with red center or vice versa to match!

    I love the seat idea.

    Good work.

    • Thanks guys, I actually had the inserts on the side covers done in red first but it didn't look right.

      • im not sure if i understand why you did this? I have one breather for every carb. Why only two? and this setup? just curious
        1978 E XS1100 purchased for =$600.00
crap load of time spent modifying it = Priceless
My bike has the XS motor but can't really call it XS11
(or at least it still looks like the XS motor)
it has about 50% of the frame left from the XS bike

        • I've spent a lot of time reading on the airbox and carb debate; to be perfectly honest my first reason for going to pods was that I like the way they look. My second reason was because the boots on the airbox were in horrible condition, I couldn't even use them as velocity stacks.

From what I read on here I realized I would need some sort of velocity stack to get it to run half decent and I am too cheap to buy new boots, so I found an old radiator hose that fit the carbs. Initially I was looking at having a pod on each carb but I had read they let too much air in (posts about people blocking half of them off with tape, etc).
Then I was thinking about a PVC intake with one pod on the end to create a little restriction; but in thinking about that it seemed that the carb closest to the pod would have lots of air while the one at the far end would be starved for air.
So I went for something in the middle. My thinking (which may be way off) is that it needed to have a little restriction as well as velocity stacks.
I know that Rick (I think it's Rick anyway) will disagree and say that the top port needs to be vented to the atmosphere, but it seems to run well now revs fine and idles great.
I was thinking that if it didn't run well the way i had set it up I could make a cut or drill a hole on the rubber hose near the top vent and vent it that way.

Anyway, thats the long story of why I made those.

          • On a side note I figured out the smoking issue.

Turns out the bike that the header and exhaust had come from was rearended and had spent some time on its side. Well that had caused a bunch of oil to seep into the header pipes.

            Instant smokescreen!

The more I rode it the longer it would take for the smoking to start. But once it did it was a thick cloud.

I pulled the muffler off and the packing was wet with oil. Then I pulled the header off and, nope, no oil in there. Put the header back on and fired it up. No more smoke. Loud as @#$#@!. But no smoke!

Time to clean the muffler out and get some new packing.

                • The bike looks great. I like the seat idea. It's a clean custom.
I have most of a set of rear sets, hope to figure them out one day when I run out of projects.
One thing I thinnk I would work on is a set of side covers that fit into the frame and run on the bottom of the seat. Maybe silver like the Yamaha srx 600. I think it was an 86?
Good work, If that's your first project...you're awesome!

                  • Cool man! I second what Garrett said, though. Something needs to happen with those covers. You might even think about ditching them altogether. But, if you want to keep them, the ones from an XS11 might fit in there.

                    • Those sidecovers...

.. would look cool if they were swapped side-to-side and turned upside down..

So, It's been quite a while since the thread started (I've read through most of it...)
and I remember waaaayyyy back you mentioned that she was giving you the "look" when the parts were showing up on the front steps..... I picked up on this statement because I'm familiar with it.
What woman wouldn't like what you've done.... and your creativity?!
Thinking she's diggin it and all is well?
                        That bike is awesome!
                        Great job.

                          • Wow, seems like I have to change the side covers! I was on the fence with them anyway. I think that I just accepted them because I am tired of working on it, I want to ride it! I may try to flip them around and see how that looks (price is right).

Those SRX covers look cool and would probably be pretty easy to make.

                            Thanks for the feedback guys!

                              Hi Steve,
those covers are shaped to fit up to the seat and airbox that ain't there no more.
On the bike as is, they do look kinda wrong.
What's behind them anyway? Perhaps the bike would look better if you just took them off?

                              • I'd have to fab something else up, removing the covers exposes the battery and fuse box.
