I thought some members could be confused when we all talk about the carb boots having three layers. I have some old carb boots so I decided to cut them in half to see what is actually there. I was ever so suprised to find they are not what I expected at all. I decided to post a pic of the cut in half Carb boots so others could see what they look like. Here they are, I hope they help someone understand the concept and how they can in fact leak if the holes/cracks are in the right place.

I never even noticed the date was on those pictures. I had just replaced the camera batteries and when it wanted to set the date, I thought if I cancelled then it would not show. OOOPS2-79 XS1100 SF

Hi,
I did not expect to see the white area at all, I am assuming that that is a separate type of rubber, perhaps put in as a strengthener in the mold before the rest of the rubber was poured..
It looks like the most sensitive and or thin area is going to be right next to the carb attachment area, eh? That would also be an area where the viberating motion would be at its strongest too. Is anyone seeing that area as the area where most boots fail, if I can ask???Bikes Now.

I am guessing the metal runs almost to where the carb lip would sit inside the boot. This then let's the rubber flex enough to get the carbs in and seal well. Would probably be pretty hard if the metal went all the way through to the end.Nathan

Yes the "white area" is indeed just aluminum. It is just the flash from the camera that gives it the white color. The cracks that were in these were mostly just to the carb side of the metal area.2-79 XS1100 SF
