  • Carb Boot Cutaway

I thought some members could be confused when we all talk about the carb boots having three layers. I have some old carb boots so I decided to cut them in half to see what is actually there. I was ever so suprised to find they are not what I expected at all. I decided to post a pic of the cut in half Carb boots so others could see what they look like. Here they are, I hope they help someone understand the concept and how they can in fact leak if the holes/cracks are in the right place.

I know its snowing up there but are you so bored that you have to cut stuff up. What's next an engine so you can show how the cct works?

I never even noticed the date was on those pictures. I had just replaced the camera batteries and when it wanted to set the date, I thought if I cancelled then it would not show. OOOPS

                what the,,,,,,

                Hi,

I did not expect to see the white area at all, I am assuming that that is a separate type of rubber, perhaps put in as a strengthener in the mold before the rest of the rubber was poured..

It looks like the most sensitive and or thin area is going to be right next to the carb attachment area, eh? That would also be an area where the viberating motion would be at its strongest too. Is anyone seeing that area as the area where most boots fail, if I can ask???

I think, but correct me if I am wrong Rasputin, the "white area" is metal and not just a different type of rubber. It is there to strengthen from collapsing due to vacuum or expansion due to backfire through the carbs, as well as a surface against the head to bolt on.

I am guessing the metal runs almost to where the carb lip would sit inside the boot. This then let's the rubber flex enough to get the carbs in and seal well. Would probably be pretty hard if the metal went all the way through to the end.

Yes the "white area" is indeed just aluminum. It is just the flash from the camera that gives it the white color. The cracks that were in these were mostly just to the carb side of the metal area.
