What is it that changed so much that a person can't use the later model kits on the early model carbs?

Other than the pilot jet no longer getting fuel through the mains, and couldn't that be plugged like the early 80 carbs were?

The main jets are also different. If you. Look up the 80+ ones they come with airjets and all the main jets are smaller... and the needle is diff.... I saved the needle number on the phone I'll have to get it later and post them

Most likely the are no appreciable gains to be had by modding the early carbs. The 80 and up engines were de-tuned by law for emissions and as with anything else people came up with ways to undo those changes and the carbs were the single most effective and easiest way to do that. JMHO

I disagree. The only thing 'de-tuned' on later bikes were the cams and ignition timing.

And compression, and tuned leaner (especially in Ca) to meet clean air standards. I agree though that the carbs are not a significant factor in the issue. I believe that the larger valves were supposed to make up at least in part for the de-tuning stuff, but it obviously didn't quite work.
