Can someone measure as accurately as possible the ring groove depths on a new piston?

I have part numbers for the rings (Top, Second and Oil as well as Gapless top and rail) but Ed @ Total Seal made me promise not to release them until I could confirm the ring groove depths.

Once I get the depths (I believe they are not all the same so please measure all three) I can get them put on the computer system @ Summit Racing
and I will post them here as well as the XJ forum so we can get rings.

I will post part numbers for standard as well as the 3 oversizes.

I think I know what they are but I don't have a new piston to measure.

    Thanks in Advance,
Someone was going to mail them a piston for them to measure so they could be sure of the size.

Could someone tell me how having the throttle wide open affects the compresion test reading please?

That's easy... to get an accurate compression test, you have to have something to compress; with the throttle closed, the cylinders can't draw in enough air and you'll get a low reading...

            Let me know

This weekend I'm going to pick up some spare engine parts and I'll be able to spare a piston for a while.

Give me the contact information and I will send out a used piston out of an SG.
I think for ring purposes it does not matter.
            Correct me if I'm wrong.

Or did this die on the vine?

I just need the ring depth as accurately as possible.

A Vernier or dial caliper is fine.

I have the specs on the rings that should fit but I

am not allowed to release the part numbers until

I can confirm the ring groove depth.

              Thanks in Advance,

Aaah! So obvious! Yet, so obscure! One of those "I can't believe I didn't think of that" moments here..... It had never occurred to me before!

What's even more interesting, if you remove the carbs you'll get an even higher reading; somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 psi. The restriction of the closed slides limits the air that gets into the motor too...

                      As per my measurements

                      O.K. Guys here's the deal.

Can someone measure as accurately as possible the ring groove depths on a new piston?

top 2 are real close maybe they are supposed to be the same but; the oil rail is definitely different.

Piston has 45K miles on it that and I'm not a machinist.
I did the best I could.

                          Groove to ring relationship

What is the desired effect of the the groove depth to the cross section of the ring?

I'm guessing it has to be able to secure the ring and allow it to compress as needed but; is there an exact ratio? cross section to groove depth.

Is there an additional way to tell if you way ring wear besides the end gap?
I'm thinking the cross section would be smaller as the ring wears.

I measured a couple rings and they were 2.98 MM and 2.18 both smaller than the groove.
Being that rings are designed to wear this data really is meaningless unless I knew what the original dimensions of a ring would be.

                          TIA
                          Rick

PS any new developments with getting ring replacements?

O.K. here is the word on the rings.

Total Seal doesn't have an oil ring to fit because the ring groove is too shallow.

The second ring they might have off the shelf depending on the measurement.

The top ring is a go.

I tried to get them added @ Summit Racing but the part number system is set up differently @ Total Seal for ring sets in less than lots of 500!

So all of our ring sets are custom except for the Wiseco giant pistons.

                            Contact Ed Law @ 800-874-2753

PLEASE CONTACT ED LAW ON ALL CUSTOM ORDERS.

Ed told me that they can even machine the ring grooves on your pistons.

Once you get a Quote Number from Ed all you have to do is contact Summit Racing and purchase the Quote Number.

Ed said that you would get a better price thru Summit than from Total Seal direct.

                            Thanks,
