He said he would need a piston to get the ring width right. The way he talked, it can be worn as they would check groove width at the very back of the groove where there wouldn't be much wear. I'd do this, but 1. I have three bikes all partially disassembled in my garage now and really don't want to generate yet more parts to keep track of... and 2. I've been trying to shake off a nasty, long-lasting cold and don't want to go out into my unheated shop until it's gone...

Maybe a new post to call attention to this?

      oh i've got pistons

I've got the original four pistons that i just pulled from my XJ and I've got four that i just bought that are on their way from a 78 XS1100.

If i'm correct, there's no difference between the two... but as long as they promise to give it back I can send either one out =)

If you guys would like, i can take some pics of the ones I have now and I'll let someone wiser than me pick out the best canditate (or two...) Shouldn't be more than a few bucks to ship I'd think.

Let me know and we can get this rolling

edit: I know the ones i have still have the original rings and I belive the ones on their way do also... that might make it even easier for them

I've got my pistons out of my '81 XS1100. The've been glass beaded and are perfectly clean. I'd be glad to send one out as I am in need of new rings. Just let me know the particulars.

Yeah we probably should move to a new thread for this.

And if it would help I have the NOS set of 1st overs if they could use that for right width.

Ok, there's enough interest, so let me get back to him on sending a piston. I'll stress that the piston will have to be returned. Josh, you're closest to them (they're in Arizona), so shipping would be cheapest for you. I'll verify that a clean, glass-beaded piston will be suitable (although I can't see why it wouldn't be..). This may take a day or two as I won't be home today.

Just a follow-up note. Stock bore for an XJ is 71.5mm (stroke is 68mm) The forged pistons I mentioned earlier are 79.325 mm by means of a friend's dial caliper, meaning they would - probably - fit an 80mm bore. Would make the XS engine out to be about 1232 CCs. No wonder they were marketed as racing pistons.

                      An Update on New Rings....

Ok, it seems there's been a bit of ball-dropping at their end. The guy I originally emailed was away at a trade fair, so one of his assistants is who called me. After talking to him and posting what came out of that conversation, I emailed him with a bit more info and a few more questions.

                      No response.

So I get an email from the first guy yesterday wanting to know if I'd been helped. I recap what's transpired to date, said I was stll looking for a few more answers if possible.

                      I'm back to wait mode....

I emailed Keith about this yesterday!
I hadn't seen this thread yet!

I asked him about their Maxseal rings ( gapless top).

Personally I won't build an engine without Maxseal rings.

I have seen independant testing where an engine gained over 10%

power from just changing to gapless top rings.

Longer engine life, cleaner oil, better vacuum, less tailpipe emissions, and more power?

                              O.K. I'm in!

                                O.K. Guys here's the deal.

Can someone measure as accurately as possible the ring groove depths on a new piston?

I have part numbers for the rings (Top, Second and Oil as well as Gapless top and rail) but Ed @ Total Seal made me promise not to release them until I could confirm the ring groove depths.

Once I get the depths (I believe they are not all the same so please measure all three) I can get them put on the computer system @ Summit Racing
and I will post them here as well as the XJ forum so we can get rings.

I will post part numbers for standard as well as the 3 oversizes.

I think I know what they are but I don't have a new piston to measure.

                                Thanks in Advance,
