  • MikesXS coil numbers?

I have read in various threads about using the coils for an XS650 on the XS1100's. My question is, which part number/coils do I want for my '80 Standard? I have read about using the black ones, however I have read about using the green ones as opposed to the black.

Any help, suggestions, advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

these are the good ones Part #17-6810. The dual tower black ones work too but there have been quite a few peole that have had them fail withing a year.

Thanks for the part number. Do you know if I can bypass the ballast resistor with these?

Yes. These are 3 ohm coils so you MUST remove the ballast resistor if you switch to these coils.

I installed these coils a couple months ago and have not had any problems with them so far. and they give you a much hotter spark as well

what's a ballast resistor? and will i need to do it on my 1979 XS1100 special if i use the green coils on mikesxs.com?

On the bottom side of the top left frame rail right by the coils there is a small silver rectangle with 2 red works coming out on it. That is the ballast resistor. It creates am extra 1.5 ohms resistance to give the coils a total of 3 ohms. (stock coils are 1.5 already) so yes you would have to remove your as well if you step up to mikes green coils.

thank you and do the spark plug caps need to be 5k ohms total? if so, why do they sell a 1k ohm cap?

The resistor caps are just to eliminate radio interference. Really you can run non resistor caps and non resistor plugs. But stock is 5k caps and non resistor plugs. I would not go over 5k per wire though.

maybe i'll just go with 1k caps then, i have no radio

Nevermind, with the coils that i'm getting, it says that 5k ohm caps are required

                        Haarstad:

You could also run non-resistor caps with resistor spark plugs. From what I've read, it turns out that you don't need to worry about how much resistance you've got on your spark plugs and caps unless you're running radios, but 5kohm is standard.

Also, when you disconnect the ballast resistor, take the two wires that used to plug into it, and plug them into each other, or you won't get spark.

                        Good luck!

Good point about plugging the wires together, guess I should have specified that.

I put in the dual tower black coils from Mike's XS, and one of them's giving me problems in the first 3000 km. It could be my installation job, but seems to be the coil, as it's only a problem once it gets hot.
