Sure glad you didn't slip and drive that screwdriver through the flesh between your thumb and first finger.Good thing your shop floor is so clean too!

Am I the only one that keeps an extra new one of this on hand? Anyway now that I have a SOFA, I don't have that problem anymore...
Of all the fixes, I like the welded on 19mm nut the best. Used to be able to buy them that size aftermarket...

rounded off nuts/bolts
It's a bit more of a PIA, but I used a dremel to downsize the bolt while it was still on the bike. Just couldn't see ripping it out of there by more primitive means. Slipped an 11mm on it, and it came right off. Then I used a new one for the install.
But that old one is going to get the 19mm Talbot Treatment before the next oil change. That's gotta be the ticket on this procedure.
Nice bike in the background though.Comment

For getting rounded bolts out before the file treatment, try these. http://www.koken-tool.co.jp/en/index.html
Click on the Nut Twister. Best damned tool I've ever used for shagged bolt heads. I dont usually use the bolts again, but I could see that reusing the filter bolt may be nessecary, but I'd probably do the 19mm welding thing.1980 SG. (Sold - waiting on replacement)

I use a torque wrench when installing the bolt. Tighten to 20 #/ft and it will come right off every time. 31 years now, same bolt, no oil leaks. Oh yeah, use a six point socket.Mike Giroir

Several years back, SWMBO purchased for me, on fathers day, a socket set called Metrinch... damn things work wonderful. high quality ratchet...even a little round 'finger' ratchet for doing the small stuff. My only complaint is that there aren't enuf deepwell sockets in the larger size.... rounded off bolts are no longer a headache....

Yep..they grab the 'flats'. I thought so too about the quality when i opened the box...."oh boy, el cheapo tools".... i was wrong. other than previously mentioned deep wells (i have since found out you can buy them separately through the company....) the only bad thing is the screwdriver attachments...the 'socket' they are molded to is too big (diameter) to do a whole lot. 99% of the time i grab these tools rather than my SnapOn or Craftsman tools. If i need 1/2" drive then i go with the SnapOn or Craftsman, but so far i havent needed that kind of wrenching power on bikes....'81H (my first XS ) "Grey Ghost"
