  • Cleaning idle circuits??

I'm having a problem syncing the carbs on my 81 special. I know when cleaning the carbs the idle ports have to be given the needed attention. When I sync the carbs I have to crank the idle adjust screw way too many revs to get the idle to 1000. Then after revving up the engine it takes a while before the idle returns to 1000. I'm guessing I didn't get the idle ports clean in one or more carbs.
Question: Where do the three holes in the carb go? I know one goes through to the pilot screw. Where do the other two originate if different? How can I confirm that the passages are clean? Thanks!

Do a search for carb cleaning posted by Wildkat. It has everything you need to know and it has pics.

Thanks! I read that thread. Still not clear on the idle circuits.

Maybe this will help. It's for BS32's, but the fuel flow is the same on the 34's. Check the flow diagrams, and it will show you how the gas and air travel through the carbs.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

The mixture screw has its own hole . That one and the other three connect directly to the pilot jet for fuel and the air pilot jet in the intake bell for air. The air and fuel mix above the pilot jet.

The main thing to concentrate on is the jet down in the bowl itself. Use the straw on the can of carb cleaner to blast the gunk out of there. It should spray you right in the eye! The three tiny holes in the carb throat all link to the pilot jet, and as the butterfly opens, more of the holes are exposed to allow more fuel into the engine. You should be able to spray carb cleaner into the spot where the pilot jet goes (make sure you remove the pilot jet to clean in there) and watch the cleaner come up through the holes.
