Has anyone found a good black/gold flake paint to match the 79 OEM paint?

2 part automotive isnt that expensive. You could get a pint (which would be way more than you need) for about 30-35 dollars.Nathan

Auto base / coat clear is what I am thinking but looking a paint chips and then what it looks like on the bike when it is too late can be bad, i was hoping someone had found a brand/ auto paint code that worked great as I cant find a jobber that can match it from yamaha year/model?1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

not around here you couldn't. Saskatoon price for a one US pint can of the Pumpkin's Tangier Orange, which is a plain ol' GM fleet colour, is $60 not including the hardener and extender that needs to go with it. And so what if a pint is far more than you need? You still gotta buy the whole pint, eh? BTW, fancy metalflake and pearlised paints can cost up in the hundreds, someone posted here about some wondrous fancy-dan paint that cost him $500 a pint. I wasn't so miffed about my $60 paint after reading that.Last edited by fredintoon; 07-08-2010, 11:36 PM.Fred Hill, S'toon

I work at a Orielly's and some of our stores have a paint scanner. It is called a spectrometer and it is kind of a cool deal. You just need somthing atleast a foot square for them to take three readings off and they can mix you some paint to match. And if you go base coat / Clear coat the paint will probably run you about $25 for a pint, then activator is like another $15 for a quart of that. Then reducer for another twenty and your set for about $60.1978 XS1100

Look here: www.paintwithpearl.com
Their gold microflake is a bit larger than the stock flake but gives a similar job. Beware, it only takes about 1/4 teaspoon (or less) for a quart cup and it gets everywhere. Most people add it to the clear coat but I like it better when added to the black color coat.Mike Giroir

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

Are you all saying that you spray the clear with the same gun as the base? Doesn't make sense. If you ask, the paint store will tell, that you need a different nozzle, and you should not use the same gun. Ask a auto painter if they would use the same gun. Don't know maybe you all have nice equipment. The paint shop we used, only needed about a foot square to get good readings. Also, you want to clean and polish the area you intend to scan.1980 XS1100LG Midnight

Excuse me.
Im not a painter but i have done some painting.
At the cost of Metalflake i know id put it in the clear. The 1st clear coat, 2nd if not enough the 1st time.
Then cover with as many coats as i have clean clear left.
If im not mistaken, and i dont think i am, If you put the flake in the paint all youll get is painted flake.
Not to sure how youll see black flake in black paint.
Just my 2 cents.

to spray to a professional standard, yes, you need a different paint gun for every different application, plus a downdraft paintbooth and a 5 year apprenticeship.
I got this $30 paint gun and a home made compressor.
My paint looks OK from across the street and that's good enough for me.Fred Hill, S'toon
