A venture tank has the YAMAHA emblems held on with glue, the Standard tank uses screws to hold them on. The second way to tell is look at the front of the tank. the standard tank is about the same level from the front to the cap, the venture tank is about 1" taller at the cap.Ray Matteis

If you plan on using a Venturer tank on a different year standard, you will need taller-than-stock handlebars.Skids (Sid Hansen)

Anyways, you can all so look at the front edge of the tank and the "dips" in the sides, on the venture the front edge of both is more flat, and the regular standard tank is more rounded. Also most venture tanks seem to have the white "flashing" in the side dips.1979 xs1100 Special -

The only two venture tanks I've seen in person were blue with white flashing, I think that was the "popular" color in 81? If you wanted to send me a pic I'd give you my opinion. Don't worry, I wont swipe it, I've already got a Venture tank
Really though, if you've got a picture I don't think anyone on the forum is "low" enough to "steal" it. Post it up and get a solid yes/no.
Oh yeah, your question, I think about a gallon bigger.1979 xs1100 Special -

I would say any tank that has decent paint and is not rusted to death inside is worth that and then some. Let alone the Venture.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I'd give 50 for it, what its worth to you depends on how much you want the extra 40 or so miles of range? If its in decent condition you can probably sell it here on the forum for more then 50 bucks if you decide you don't want it. If you do want it I might be interested in buying your "standard" sized tank, to put on the venture I took my venture tank off of.
Things to look for:
Big dents (possibly filled with bondo), you can find bondo by trying to stick a magnet to the tank, no bondo = magnet sticks, bondo = magnet won't stick.
Really rusty inside, can be cleaned but makes the tank worth less
Missing key, no key makes it real hard to get the gas cap open, especially on a standard/venture tank. You'll have to have a key made, probably around 10-20 bucks.1979 xs1100 Special -
