That's not bad for a good pair. I have a set of 8 (cheapo Sh##) and a couple of the interchangable ones also, but it was a real pain getting the "C" clips out of the front M/C.
I agree on the pain on the m/c, I ended up using two long finish nails in the cheap snap ring pliers.... improvise....
Hi all,
First post here and new to motorcycle maintenance. So I have a 79 special that I welded O2 bungs into the header so I can adjust air/fuel ratio per carb using Innovative's LM2 meter, to try and get it through emissions. - - -
Hi brendan and welcome,
how did you cope with sealing the O2 bungs into the XS11's stock double-walled exhaust pipes?
Or does your bike have single walled aftermarket pipes?
You sure you need to pass an emissions test on a '79?

Thanks for all the replies To answer a few of the questions that came up, I'm in AZ (Maricopa County) and the vehicle emissions here are far worse than CA. Every vehicle newer and including '67 needs to be tested yearly, newer vehicles are exempt for a few years or need to be checked every other year. For my '79 bike the standards are :
Hydrocarbons in PPM 1800
CO in % 5.5
I have a 4-1 aftermarket header that is singled walled and I TIG'd in the O2 bungs; this really helps to tune each carb individually. I'm running the stock 42.5 Pilot jet, but need to look at the float still as I do have one carb that is rich at idle. Thanks again for all the great ideas on the snap-ring removal/install!!
Don't know how they could get away with that. There wasn't any emissions standards till the 70's. Looks like a lawsuit in the makings to me.

There wasn't any emissions standards till the 70's...
Actually, national emmision 'standards' started in 1963; that was the year PVC valves showed up on everything and the old 'road draft tubes' (who remembers those?) disappeared. California was the only state that did anything retroactive though; they required some pre-63 vehicles to be fitted with PVC systems, but they only went back a few years if I remember right.
I am surprised that they're checking bikes; I don't think even California does that, but I may be wrong. I know that here, only certain counties do emission testing, and once the vehicle is over 25 years old it becomes exempt even in the places where they test.
