Yup.. you NEED that if you want the bike to stay in a gear. A detent pin rides on that on the right side of the motor. As you shift a gear, that detent pin rides into the next notch as that shift cam rotates, and it holds all your gears in the right place. Pretty critical little dude... I have lost that clip on the end of that before and it got cocked sideways on the shaft. It wouldn't shift any more, and it required splitting the cases to fix it. No difference in the transmissions between the XS/XJ besides the early models had that kickstarter gear in there.

so the little nob on the end of the shift drum is gone and so is that star thing?
on my xj 1100 and its installed in the bike
the pictures is from a xs1100 and as you can see this star thing is on there
ok 1st here is my tranny and see in the picture no gear and i dont se any thing for that star thing to grab onto ie detent pin? i now the oil pums sits right above it.
does that star thing along with detend pin ride on fork shaft that and the countershaft with gears is all that i took out and oil pump.
also see that gear on the main shaft thats the one i cant get main and 1st gear past i need like 1/8 inch to get 1st gear past it.
In the pic of your transmission without that star plate, the detent pin is underneath it shown here...
You have to split your cases to get to this bolt and detent pin.
Flipped over, with the plate installed.
Not going to be much help with the gear install since I normally split the cases to do so. I have heard of people having problems because of that kickstarter gear you have in there.

The little knob on the end is still there. It's part of the shaft and installed into a hole in the case right under that #22 you see in the pic. What's missing is that star plate and a circlip that holds it on.

ok i see it goes inside the bolt and the keeper holds it on there
and it is positiond under the shift cam the start lokking gear on the end of the shif drum.
well that would explan why it rattled going into 1st gear and wouldnt go into any other gears properly
i donr grt how all that would be gone along with the kick start gear someone has been in this tranny and dint put it back right thats what i think
Yup.. the spring goes inside the bolt and that detent pin. That metal piece has a slot you put over one of the case ribs, then you bend up a side to lock in the bolt.
And yeah, like I said, to take that pin out, someone had to have split the cases. Good luck and keep us informed on the progress.
