  • Just joined the XS11 family.....

Well guys, I just picked up my "new to me" 1980 XS1100 last week and boy do I have my work cut out for me.

The "person" who had it before me decided he was gonna start chopping the frame and shortening the wiring harness and now the only thing that will turn on is oil light, after I put it back on. lol And this is only after a day and a half of digging before I located the kill switch/ignition bypass tucked under the brake line mount on the forks.

So, after long debate, I have ripped every wire off the bike and am going to re wire it with just the basics and go from there.

I do have a question tho, using shops chops pics, I have fab'd up the hard tail and now the million dollar question is, How do you get the battery back in there? lol There is no way in hell it will fit under the new frame location.

Ok well thanks for listening, I am sure I will be asking many, many questions in the very soon future.

        Hi Lorsien and welcome,
seeing that you have kept the swingarm it's not too late to salvage the frame. Cut the struts away from the frame at the top and complete the triangulation back down onto the swingarm. Put the two shocks under the seat like a Vincent, make a Vincent style hugger rear fender too. That'd give the bike the different look you want and keep your spine out of chiropractic care.
You could put two smaller AGM batteries (or other battery types that don't mind not sitting upright) laying flatwise under/inside the seat and connected in parallel.

Ya know, with all this hardtailling going on, has anyone stopped to fiqure out what damage is being done to the swing arm pivots and the driveshaft u joint? Seems to me that the swing arm is still going to move slightly at the pivot point and going be absorbing enormous stresses, which must eventually damage the pivots and possibly even cause cracking at the welded points at the top. I never studied one closely enough to know but it's JAT.

I saw that bike for sale...

or at least the pics look familiar - did it come from a member here or was that on CL that I saw it - I'm leaning toward CL as a failed project - not enough time and money to complete, etc...

              Arlington huh?

Good - we need higher numbers south of the Red River because someone up there in OK keeps hogging all the bikes!

I'm not naming names, but trbig you know who you are...

Be ready to take alot of sh!t about the hard tail.

A lot here, myself included, don't agree with hard tailing.

That being said, even though we are a bit prejudiced in that area, WELCOME to the site. We're more than happy to help with any thing we can.

There are used harnesses available out there but a lot of that stuff isn't nessessary on a custom build.

Just ask and you'll get answers, and answers, and answers, and answers.

(Oh BTW........Montreux_Blue is a dick.........he told me that.)

why yes it was on CL, got rid of a couple of guns I had laying around. Wanted a new project as my 78 CB750 is waiting on carbs and tank to be painted.

But, as the hardtail goes, I just like them. I made the 78 rigid as well.

Fredintoon, What do you mean, can still salvage the frame? I made the hardtail already, lol The first two pics are the original config. The rest are after I fab'd up the hard tail.

I agree with the AGM battery. If you look around, you should be able to find a small size battery that has the reserve amp hour rating to spin the starter. You will have to build the battery box for it, but looking at what you have done so far I don't think you'll have any problems.
Don't worry about the hard tail and the chit some of the members here will give you. It's YOUR machine, and you are building it the way YOU want it! Welcome to the madness, and please keep pictures as the build progresses.

Since you don't have the air box anymore, it looks like you have plenty of room to mess with. And FYI, those pod filters suck because they have a big lip inside them that restrict air flow.

Yeah, ignore the hardtail complaints, if you stay here you will see the same time and again.
