Heel-toe shifter questions come up on a regular basis. There were kits made for the XS; once in a great wile these come up on eBay or a member sells a set. Advantage is these are bolt-on kits.
Others have made some nice looking home-brew devices but you have to be something of a fabricator to duplicate them
I put a Honda 90 heel-toe shifter on my XJ; splines and everything fit with no modifications. Added floorboards as well but mounted them below stock position to get a better angle on the knee. Used a set made for HD with a male mounting post; fit into the XJ's stock mounts after I ground out the rivet that held the stock pegs in place. (Added a washer to both sides of the post.) I got the set on eBay - many years ago! - for a reasonable price. New sets are still available. This style is adjustable for height as well as forward - back placement. They will flip up just like the stock set if you lay the bike down. In my case, since I mounted them lower than stock, it cost some ground clearance.
Poor man's heel-toes shifter and floorboard! Note the shifter is angled down from horizontal - hard to tell in photo - but allowed less foot movement to shift. One other comment is that this shifter is a bit long; if I was going to do it again I would cut the heel pad off and move it forward abut 1/2 - 3/4 inch but that really depends on each rider's geometries.
Not the same as forward controls but this approach may be an option for some.
Right-side floorboard required a bit of work to get it to fit outside the brake pedal. I don't recall this was a big deal but I do remember it had to be done.
Both sides are angled down just a bit to give the boards a more natural "feel" when riding. It took a bit of trial and error to come up with the best settings but it was worth it in the end.Jerry Fields

Thanks Jerry...I think that is about what I need.I am having problems up shifting and need to move my whole leg but down shifting is not so bad.
