That's OK, I just figured out how to make an engine hoist in the garage so I won't have to lift it by myself

In my case, it isn't a complete death yet. Usually, on the first try, it won't grab. After that, it will grab for a second or two before it releases and the starter goes "whizzz". When I was getting my bike back on it's feet after an extended no use / low use period, it was REALLY bad on that first startup attempt. But I do have to admit, it has been getting better now that I have 150 or so miles on it. Given that it has had this behavior for the last 21 years that I have owned the bike, I don't THINK it is going to quit working all together any time soon.
In another post, a person suggested that I try thinner oil. I have always used Mobile 1 15W-50 pretty much year round. This weekend, I may try refilling it with 10W-40 and see if that makes a difference. With the highs around here in the high 30s or low 40s, I REALLY don't think I need the "50" portion of the current oil.1981 XS1100 Special

Starter clutch fix (NOT) update...
Took the bike for NYS inspection on Wed and I was discussing my starter clutch problem with a Yamaha mechanic I've know for over 20 yrs, so I respect his opinions and expertise. He suggested that along with the springs/teats/rollers I should have replaced the kick idler gear. His thinking was that the boss on the gear may be worn down out of spec. That wasn't even a consideration for me, hadn't read anything about it, but it made sense when he said it. To be honest, I don't know whether I installed my original or the one that MRO sent me, I just picked the nicest looking one and cleaned it up a bit with crocus cloth. Being that there is no written spec on the diameter, and the gear is NLA, a truly new one is out of the question. So we're limited to used ones. I wonder if any of you that have one lying around would measure and post the diameter for future reference so the next guy can avoid what happened to me. Here's the one of mine that's NOT in the motor. 46.93 mm. So post your numbers, boys.The biggest diameter wins. How big is your unit?

I think the lack of there being a spec on this is because that's a non-issue. As long as those rollers can pinch that shaft without getting to the end of their travel, the exact diameter of the shaft shouldn't matter. No disrespect meant towards your friend's knowledge.

If it got to a point where the shaft was something drastic... like a 1/4" smaller diameter or something, they would get to the end of their travel and not grab that shaft. But as long as those rollers can still get to where they contact that shaft, they should pinch it on startup.
The way that works, is those rollers come down at that angle and rest against the shaft from that tiny bit of spring pressure. Anyone who's not had one apart, the springs remind me of a longer version that goes in a retractible pen.. pretty unsubstantial. When you hit the starter, the shaft tries to pull those rollers down even further and pinches that shaft and pulls it along until the motor catches, spins faster than the clutch is spinning, and centrifigul force pushes the rollers back out of the way.. much like the little steel balls do on a mower. So, whether those rollers pinch that shaft further up in their slots, or down towards the end of it with substantial shaft wear, it should still pinch it and work.
What I think happens, is those rollers can get flattened a bit in one area, the shaft can get some notches over years of being pinched, and the springs can become so weak that they don't push those rollers down/up against the shaft. With the rollers and springs situated in equal thirds around that shaft, invariably you'll have one that sits on the bottom side with the motor off, and a weak spring can't even override gravity to get that roller pushed up against the shaft.

Tod, I agree with everything you wrote and that's the way I understand the works. That's also what's confusing the hell out of me...mine don't work. New roller/teats and spring and it slips. Well, it works without the plugs installed. With compression, it slips.
